Indian cricket star Virat Kohli has firmly ruled out any possibility of returning to Test cricket, ending recent speculation around a comeback to the longest format. Speaking during the launch event of the sportswear brand One8 in Delhi, Kohli made it clear that his Test career is officially behind him.

The former India captain, who retired from Test cricket in May last year, also reflected on his cricketing journey and emotional connection with Delhi, the city where his career began.

Virat Kohli Confirms He Is Finished With Test Cricket

Kohli made the statement while attending the launch event of One8, a sportswear brand where he serves as co-founder, in the national capital on Sunday.

During the event, host and comedian Danish Sait pointed out that one of the brand’s shoes was priced at Rs 9,230 — the same as Kohli’s total Test runs. He jokingly asked the batting icon whether he would consider returning to Test cricket to increase both his tally and the product’s “profitability”.

Responding humorously, Kohli said, “I would rather undersell, I’m done with it (Test cricket), thank you.”

End of an Illustrious 14-Year Test Career

Kohli announced his retirement from Test cricket in May last year, bringing an end to a celebrated 14-year journey in the format.

Over the course of his red-ball career, the 36-year-old represented India in 123 Test matches and accumulated 9,230 runs at an average of 46.85. His record includes 30 centuries and 31 half-centuries across 210 innings, with an unbeaten 254 standing as his highest score.

He remains India’s fourth-highest run-scorer in Test cricket behind:

  • Sachin Tendulkar – 15,921 runs
  • Rahul Dravid – 13,265 runs
  • Sunil Gavaskar – 10,122 runs

Kohli’s Dominant Peak Between 2016 and 2019

One of the Strongest Test Batting Phases

Between 2016 and 2019, Kohli enjoyed one of the most dominant batting periods seen in modern Test cricket.

During that stretch, he scored 4,208 runs in 43 Tests at an average of 66.79. His tally included 16 centuries and 10 fifties from 69 innings, while his highest score during the phase remained 254*.

The period also featured seven double centuries, the highest by any captain in Test cricket history.

India’s Most Successful Test Captain

Kohli also established himself as India’s most successful captain in Test cricket.

He led India to 40 victories in 68 matches after taking charge during the 2014 tour of Australia when MS Dhoni was unavailable due to injury.

Under his leadership, India developed into a dominant Test side capable of winning across different conditions and overseas venues.

Emotional Return to Delhi for One8 Launch

Later during the event at Dwarka, Kohli spoke emotionally about his roots in Delhi and the significance of launching the brand in the city where his cricket journey started.

“Delhi is the place where everything started for me. I was born in Delhi, my cricket journey started in Delhi, and Delhi will always remain a part of me. So, to be able to launch One8 in Delhi after so many years, a vision, a dream to come true like this, being the co-founder, is something that I always dreamt of. I was not sure it was going to turn into reality, but it’s the love of all of you fans over so many years that’s got us to this moment,” he added.

Conclusion

Virat Kohli’s latest remarks have effectively ended any lingering debate about a return to Test cricket. While fans may continue to celebrate his achievements in the format, the former India captain has made it clear that his chapter in whites is complete.

His legacy, however, remains firmly intact — both as one of India’s finest batters and as the country’s most successful Test captain.
