The scene at the ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam spoke volumes of it. Unfortunately, the night was not to be and on a day when Indian women’s cricket started anew, Jemimah Rodrigues showed us once again why she is the heart that revs this T20 batting line-up.

Powered by an effortless unbeaten 69 off only 44 balls, India strolled past a challenging chase to complete an eight-wicket win over Sri Lanka. The victory provides another reason to cheer — not just for India, who have taken a 1-0 lead in the five-match series, but for women’s cricket to make a smooth transition from ODI World Cup triumph into the shortest format.

The Scene Setter: Spinners Strangle the visitors

Opting to chase on account of dew that was expected later in the night after a 7.40 pm start, captain Harmanpreet Kaur – celebrating her landmark 350th international appearance – watched her bowlers execute the plan with clinical efficiency.

The breakthrough came early. Sri Lanka’s talismanic leader, Chamari Athapaththu, threatened briefly before being cleaned up by an inswinger by Kranti Gaud. From then on, India’s spinners took charge. Deepti Sharma, who remains high on being the Player of the Series at the World Cup, bowled a tactical masterclass for figures of 1/20 including an unheard-of powerplay maiden.

Also making an impressive debut was Vaishnavi Sharma. The 19-year-old put in a composed performance with the ball and conceded only 16 runs from her four overs. AlthoughSri Lanka’s Vishmi Gunaratne (39) and Harshitha Samarawickrama (21) worked to steady the innings, they were met with a disciplined attack eventually going on to post a mediocre 121 for six.

RUN OF PLAY The Rodrigues Show: A Lesson in Offside Play

India started an unlikely chase with a series of boundaries from Shafali Verma, and her early exit for 9 prompted a flicker of hope in the Sri Lankan bowlers. The optimism was short-lived as Jemimah Rodrigues walked out to the middle and as did Smriti Mandhana.

Mandhana, who became the first Indian woman to complete 4,000 T20I runs earlier in her innings, played second fiddle this time to Jemimah. “Jemi” was a whole different speed. Her feet were nimble, and timing was spot on when carving through the offside.

Key Turning Point

The high-stakes game was as good as done in the 12th over when Jemimah took on Shashini Gimhani, a 17-year-old spinner of mystery. Rodrigues showcased experience of a seasoned campaigner and took the young pacer to the cleaners, hitting four boundaries— including a cheeky reverse sweep — in that over as she raced to 50 off just 34 balls.

“I just kept it simple — So I was thinking, extend it as long as you can,” Jemimah had said after the match.

Where They Can Get Better: The Fielding Dilemma

As clinical as the win was, Harmanpreet Kaur wasn’t entirely pleased. India’s fielding was unusually sloppy and they put down four catches — the joint most in a T20I for them.

“We batted and bowled well, but we just need to improve on our fielding,” said the captain at the post-match presentation ceremony. “Can’t really blame the wet outfield.

What’s Next?

With the dust now settled, Visakhapatnam is all set to host the second T20I on Tuesday, December 23 with all the momentum firmly resting with India. For Sri Lanka, the task will be to figure out how to pierce what has been an impenetrable Indian top order. For India, it’s about fine-tuning the small margins as they look to continue building ahead of the 2026 T20 World Cup.
