On January 26th 2026 (i.e. India’s 77th Republic Day),Zepto (one of India’s largest quick-commerce companies) made headlines by successfully launching the Indian flag to an altitude of over 100,000 feet using a high-altitude weather balloon, approximately three times higher than most commercial airplanes fly. The launch of this patriotic symbol quickly garnered a lot of attention on social media and created a large amount of both appreciation and discussion about it online.

This impressive feat was completed through a partnership between Zepto and creator Zikiguy, who combined technological innovation with national pride to create a memorable tribute to India. In addition to the actual flag launch video going viral on social media, this video documented the entire process from the initial preparations to the moment the flag was released as the weather balloon was reaching max altitude, with the Earth’s curvature visible in the background.

Technical Execution and Mission Planning

While Zepto’s intent was to raise the Indian tricolor flag into the stratosphere, the stratosphere begins approximately 33,000 feet above sea level and continues up toward the upper atmosphere. In a series of social media posts, Zepto co-founder/CEO Aadit Palicha provided followers with an overview of their creative process and the thought that went into securing an appropriate weather balloon for the project (i.e. a weather balloon that could reach the stratosphere).

Pre-launch, the project team assembled the payload, which consisted of the cameras, the Indian Flag and tracking systems at a location separate from the hangar. In addition to assembling these items, there were several technical difficulties that were resolved while building the payload. The time it took to assemble the payload was approximately two hours.

Once the balloon was launched, it began its steady climb to higher altitudes where it would reach its highest altitude. The onboard cameras captured page views and visible Real-Time data of the Indian Flag unfurling in the distant skyline of Blue Sky. During the ascent, the team kept in communication with Air Traffic Control (ATC) to monitor flight paths to ensure the balloon did not interfere with flights flying through the balloon’s path.

Challenges Associated with High Altitude Operations & Recovery

There are many unique challenges associated with the operation of equipment at the extreme altitude. The temperature at the stratosphere can reach below freezing temperatures and often results in battery failure, wiring and mechanical systems without proper insulation, as well as Stealth Technology and Recovery Operation. The Prelaunch Project Team’s previous Technical Demonstrations and Prelaunch Project Prototypes indicated that insulation and automated Deployable Systems would be essential for this mission to be successful.

After reaching the target altitude, the balloon finally burst as expected as the gasses continued to expand in the less dense air, and the payload came back down to earth on the parachute. There was tension among the team members at the beginning because the tracking signal was lost for a period of time.

Eventually, the Zepto/Zikiguy team was able to locate their recovered payload, which had ended up in a tree in a field. They were also able to confirm through video footage from the camera that the flag did indeed unfurl at altitude as anticipated.

This event caused a varied reaction on the internet. Many users have praised this effort as a creative patriotic tribute to Republic Day, lauding Zepto as well as all the content creators associated with the project. They stated that the engineering and visual effects of the mission were both awe-inspiring and symbolic of India’s technology-based aspirations.

One user stated that the mission represented more than just altitude; it further demonstrated the team’s passion for the country, which drove the entire endeavor. Another user had simply posted “Jai Hind!”, stating pride in the spirit of the nation.

While the majority of responses applaud the efforts of Project Blue Sky, not everyone celebrated the achievement with the same enthusiasm. Some netizens questioned the practical and financial recurring investments required to carry out these types of high-altitude experiments. They believed that the investment in developing infrastructure and other activities directly to the ground would yield more benefits for society than something like Project Sky would. The tweet will remain part of the collective consciousness and is viewed largely positively for the visual performance provided by Project Blue Sky and its intent.

Zepto has generated excitement as a leading fast-paced grocery service across India’s top cities. It is projected to grow exponentially into the largest provider within the competitive express-ecommerce industry in India.

Since its inception in 2020, Zepto has gained national media attention for other important reasons as well; including its upcoming IPO in 2026 and continued investment of capital from institutional and private investors. They have successfully expanded their brand through pricing strategies, as well as geographical market expansions.

In addition, the debate surrounding gig-economy labour rights and delivery partner welfare is part of the wider conversation about Zepto’s business model – wherein a lot of people view its success with admiration and scepticism (Note: This broader debate is distinct from the Republic Day project).

A High-Altitude Salute to India

The Republic Day balloon project is not only an example of the technical prowess of the business itself, but it is also emblematic of a story. It represents an act of patriotism that elevates the Indian flag beyond what most individuals can imagine into space. Whether considered to be an expression of goodwill, a marketing initiative, or the fruit of Indian technology’s grassroots innovation and ingenuity, this flight signifies the joining of the patriotic and the innovative in a singular act at the top of the Indian sky.

For those who witnessed the video footage of the last flight, the image of the Indian flag on a backdrop of deep space will undoubtedly leave an indelible impression in their minds as a marker for the Republic Day of 2026. The images of the national flag above the skyline of India symbolise the pride of the nation soaring beyond the everyday experience of individuals within the country.
