Fourteen males have been apprehended in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh after footage has become public of them hosting an Iftar event on a boat while discarding leftover non-veg into the Ganges (Ganga) River; however, a video of this event went viral on social media resulting in a police investigation as well as public backlash against the behaviour of the assailants.
The arrests have begun to foster debate regarding what constitutes appropriate limits on public behaviour at a religiously significant location, as well as atheism with respect to environmental issues and religious sensitivities.

Public Backlash from Viral Video

Police reported that during the incident at Panchganga Top in Varanasi, an individual was allegedly captured on video consuming ‘chicken biryani’ (rice mixed with spices and cooked with chicken) on a boat while breaking fast due to Ramadan (Islamic holy month).

Reportedly, the video had also captured the individuals throwing leftover food, including bones from the chicken, into the Ganga River eliciting a lot of ire from individuals who had viewed it on social media.

Numerous individuals who viewed the video described the event as being insensitive, given that the Ganga River is considered sacred by millions of Hindus who worship her and regard her as a deity.

Complaint Filed by BJP Youth Leader

The police acted after a complaint was filed by Rajat Jaiswal, President, Bharatiya Janata Party Youth Organisation. In his complaint, he alleged that this gathering had offended religious beliefs.

The complaint stated that the consumption of meat while gathering and also alleged the act of disposing of waste in the Ganges during this gathering, have disrespected the sanctity of the Ganges and have provoked public outrage.

After the filing of this complaint, police teams were dispatched to find the persons depicted in the video.

Arrest of 14 People; Police Investigation Continues

Based on footage, 14 individuals will be taken into custody by the Varanasi police for involvement in this incidebt, including that of the person who operated the boat used in the video.

According to police officials, charges have been filed against all 14 individuals under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for:

  • Hurting religious sentiments
  • Creating public nuisance
  • Causing environmental damage

The Investigation is Ongoing!

According to the Varanasi police, the original authenticity of the video, as well as the precise events of the incident, is still under investigation.

Discussion about Religious Sensitivity and Urban Pollution

This incident has sparked a more significant debate among the public regarding whether throwing food waste into a holy river is disrespectful and environmentally damaging, versus whether individuals should be arrested for conducting a private Iftar gathering on a boat.

Conflicts are brought to light in Varanasi since it is one of the most important sites for Hindus to travel for pilgrimage. Issues continue to arise from public spaces and how various faiths can use them.

Bottom Line:

The police will take action cording to how the investigation goes and what the video shows. If they have proof of a crime being committed then, they will proceed with processing the case and applying the law about the incident.

The situation is being tracked closely as the story grows dim, and many are concerned that there is no resolution in this matter regarding religious freedom, the environment, and protecting a person’s ability to act in accordance with their beliefs.
