Based on the current moon phase, the beginning of Shawwal and Eidul-Fitr will occur on 21st March in 2026 in India. Since the Crescent Moon that indicates the start of Shawwal was not seen on 19th March across most of the country, Ramadan will officially end on 21st March.
The reason why the sighting of the moon is so important to the observance of Eid-ul-Fitr is that it does not have a predetermined date in the Gregorian calendar (a fixed day), as it follows the Islamic Lunar Calendar Calendar. The start of each month is dependent upon the inception (the actual sighting) of the moon.

  • The moon sighting marks the conclusion of Ramadan (the Holy month of fasting).
  • It also marks the beginning of Shawwal (the 10th month of the Islamic Calendar).
  • Therefore, each of these days (the first of Shawwal) is considered to be Eid-ul-Fitr, also referred to as the Feast of Breaking the Fast.
  • Because of this dependence upon physical observation of the moon, the dates for Eid can be different within countries, as well as between countries.

There are both regional and global differences in respect to any difference in moon visibility as a result of geography or method of observation. For example:

• In India, the standard practice is to look for the crescent moon unaided;

• In some countries (such as Saudi Arabia), the practice depends on astronomical calculations and telescopes; and

• As a result, the countries in the Arabian Gulf usually celebrate their Eid at least one day before those in South Asia.

This difference was apparent in 2026, when Eid was celebrated in parts of the Middle East before it was celebrated in India.

Religious and cultural significance

When sighting the Moon, there is both a religious aspect and a cultural/communal element which imbues the ritual with greater depth than simply being a scientific occurrence.

1. Ramadan Completed

The moon sighting signalizes the completion of the 30-day observance of Ramadan, where followers have engaged in fasting (roza), prayer and self-discipline.

2. Celebration Begins

Chand Raat—the eve of Eid–is a night of excitement, shopping and social interaction as families prepare for Eid celebrations.

3. Symbolising Togetherness & Gratitude

Eid-ul-Fitr is an opportunity for people to:

  • Offer Eid prayers (namaz).
  • To partake in Zakat al-Fitr (charity).
  • Share food with others to forge stronger community relationships.

The anticipation of the Moon sighting is what contributes to the emotional aspects surrounding Eid:

  • Families & friends watching the sky awaiting the announcement by the Moon committee.
  • The anticipation of the official announcement of which month it is by the moon sighting committee each month.
  • The confirmation of the sighting of the moon is met with anticipation and joy among those who celebrate Eid.

Bottom Line

The combination of these three components—faith-based observance, science & tradition, is what makes Eid-ul-Fitr so important within the Islamic community.

The moon sighting is not simply a method for determining a calendar date; it has deeper meaning, connecting individuals’ faith, timing, and community across the world.
