Astrologer Ashok Kharat has been arrested on charges of drugging and sexually assaulting a woman who was getting spiritual guidance from him. A woman has reported Kharat, alleging that he took advantage of her by pretending to be a spiritual advisor.
Allegations by the Complainant
The woman who has made these allegations states in her report that she met with Kharat multiple times in order to discuss her problems with himself and his family. Throughout their meetings, Kharat gained the survivor’s trust; he claimed in all his communications with her to be a spiritual healer. The survivor also claims Kharat put a drug into her drink during each of their meetings so that he could then sexually assault the survivor.
The complainant stated that Kharat manipulated her into silence and exerted psychological manipulation over her by stating if she were to report him, he would create serious consequences for her. According to the complaint, the alleged sexual assaults occurred over some time; therefore, there is a pattern to the alleged incidents of sexual assault.
Police Investigation and Arrest
Since the complainant filed her complaint, law enforcement has conducted an investigation into Kharat. Based upon the initial contact they had with the complainant, law enforcement has quickly detained Kharat. Presently, law enforcement is in the process of obtaining medical evaluations, forensic evaluations, and witness statements to prepare a case against Kharat for drugging and sexually assaulting the complainant.
Law authorities are looking at the possibility that there may be more victims of this crime due to the profile and visibility of the accused person. Authorities reportedly have searched and confiscated electronic devices and documentation that were in some way associated with Kharat for evidence of him having committed crimes.
