His dust is yet to settle on the second morning in the Kujawsko-Pomorska Arena, but something of the history is already starting to fill the air in Toruun. Simon Ehammer, the Swiss wonder whose career has been characterized by the unstoppable search of the right order is now writing a masterpiece. Ehammer is not only leading the heptathlon at the 2026 World Athletics Indoor Championships, he is haunting the ghost of Ashton Eaton and the world record of 6,645 points.

To the watchers of the multis, it is usually a game of survive and advance but Ehammer has made the initial six games more of a calculated attack on the record books. Going into the last 1,000-meter race, the calculations are not overly complex, but they are overwhelming: anything less than 2:43.26 will see him not only a champion, but the greatest indoor heptathlete of all time to ever slip on spikes.

The Perfect Storm: Masterpiece Building in Toruun

The past 48 hours have been a clinic in consistency and explosive power, a clinic that Ehammer has been in. It opened on Friday morning with the 60m sprint declaration. He has set a personal record of 6.69 seconds and not only did Ehammer win the heat, he indicated that he had entered a new stratosphere with his speed. Very few decathletes in history have ever ran that fast in a roof.

But the 60m had only been the appetizer. In the long jump, which is the specialty of Ehammer and also in which he has previously competed with specialists and won, his best distance was 8.15m. It was a jump that saw him almost half a meter ahead of his closest general competitor, USA competitor, Kyle Garland. Garland responded with a huge 16.21m in the shot put but Ehammer stood his ground on a 1487m to ensure that the blood loss was at its bare minimum.

By the end of his high jumping, as he jumped 2.02m to earn 3,698 points to conclude Day 1, the mumbles about a world record had become a scream.

The Saturday Surge: The Hurdles and the Vault

Friday Day 1 was the day of laying the groundwork, and Saturday morning was the day of the acceleration. Ehammer started the second day by flying through the 60m hurdles in 7.52 seconds. In perspective, that would have at least put him in the podium in the individual hurdles final at major championships at least at the time. It was a world heptathlon record and the distance between him and the rest has been increased to a chasm.

Next there was the pole vault, the one that usually gives the multi-athletes a broken heart. With each rise of the bar the tension in the arena increased. Ehammer, who was technically graceful, cleared 5.30m. Others dropped, Garland falling to third place behind a 4.80m vault and being passed by his fellow countryman Heath Baldwin, but Ehammer was untroubled.

The Human Behind the Numbers

It is against this background that the clinical implementation of these seven events has been done and a 26 year old athlete who has had to bear the weight of expectation over the years. Notorious as an athlete who plays it all or nothing, Ehammer has frequently been the player who takes a foul to make a legendary score. Now Kujawy Pomorze are witnessing a more civilized type of the Swiss star.

The intervals between efforts are calm in his eyes, there is a rhythmic breathing, as though he were no longer struggling with the events, but was passing through them. This performance seems like a redemption arc in its own time to a man who almost won the podium at the Paris Olympics. He is not only running against the eleven other men in the track, he is running against the human possibility.
