The All Indian Cine Workers Association  wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to say that they are worried about how things are getting worse for workers in the Indian film business. The group said the industry is still getting back on its feet after the huge losses incurred during the COVID-19 pandemic. During that time, lakhs of workers, young artists, and techs lost their jobs or had their pay cut significantly. In the letter, AICWA pointed out that rising fuel prices, inflation, pressure on the world economy, and rising production costs are making things more difficult for films, TV shows, web series, and ads. The group worried that if things get worse, job options in the entertainment business could shrink further, which would be bad for people who earn daily wages.

AICWA is worried about the high salaries of stars

The huge pay that top artists expect is one of the main points that the group makes. According to reports, AICWA said that due to the current economic situation, producers are having a hard time recovering their capital, while techs, spot boys, junior artists, and daily-wage workers are still unsure about their jobs.

The group thinks that cost reductions should start at the top and not affect people who depend on daily wages to survive. It has also criticised the culture of big star entourages and high production costs, asking leaders in the industry to take a more responsible stance.

People in the movie business say that star fees are one of the main reasons movie costs have been rising so much lately. As theatre sales become less stable and OTT markets become more competitive, many directors are rethinking their big budget projects.

AICWA also brought up the fact that more and more Indian films are being shot outside of India. The group said that almost 30% of Indian films are now shot outside of India, which makes it harder for Indian workers and professionals to find work.

Reports say that the group has asked the government to tell moviemakers to choose local filming spots first. This move could help local economies and cut down on wasteful foreign spending at a time when India is dealing with rising import costs and economic pressures caused by tensions around the world.

It’s interesting that this demand comes right after Kamal Haasan, a famous senior actor, asked the movie business to stop spending too much and think again about expensive foreign shoots while the crisis in West Asia lasts.

Even though production costs are rising, many recent Bollywood movies have been shot abroad. But now, people who work in the film industry think that producers may be moving more and more toward Indian places in order to save money.

People Pay Attention to PM Modi’s Message of Cutting Back

The discussion about how much the entertainment industry spends has intensified since Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently urged people to cut back on spending due to problems in the global economy and unrest in West Asia. Reports say that the Prime Minister urged people to spend less on nonessential items, buy more local goods and travel abroad only when necessary to save money and help the economy.

Modi also worried about rising import prices, fuel shortages and disruptions to global supply chains. According to economists, these factors could affect India’s financial security if global conflicts persist.

In this situation, AICWA’s call seems to align with the broader national conversation about being responsible with money and keeping spending in check.

Workers’ welfare becomes the main topic of conversation

One of the most important points that AICWA makes is the need to protect people who work in the movie business. The group stressed that techs and daily wage workers were hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic and that many are still struggling to get back on their feet financially.

As the economy worsens, production costs are rising again. This makes people worry that efforts to cut costs will hurt workers first again. AICWA has said that cutting back on luxury costs and excessive acting fees would be a more fair option than letting low income workers lose their jobs or their pay.

This problem has started a new discussion in Bollywood about how to balance making money and being successful in the business. Some people think that big budget films are important for global competition, while others say that spending should be limited to protect the industry’s long term health.

Bollywood could start a new era of making money

The Indian film industry might have to undergo a major change given the current state of the economy. Experts think that producers may focus more on films with good stories, reasonable costs, d good production planning instead of depending too much on big stars and expensive foreign plans.

If more industry groups and creators agree with AICWA’s suggestions, Bollywood might move toward making films that are more sustainable and create jobs in India while also being good for the economy.

For now, everyone is still waiting to see how the government and famous movie stars react to the growing calls for change in one of India’s biggest entertainment businesses.
