The long-awaited Minecraft Java Edition 26.2 update has been officially released by Mojang Studios, which is known as “Chaos Cubed” and is a big feature update. As the name suggests, this newest sandcastle drop brings a fascinating combination of geological awesomeness and chaotic mechanical entertainment to the sandbox.

The new update brings a brand-new biome, a very experimental block hungry passive mob and two beautiful stone families which will instantly freshen up the color palettes of community builders all over the world by sending players underground down below to explore the toxic, bubbling underground caverns.

The New Biome: Deep Inside the Sulfur Caves

Players used to playing in the dark and quiet of Deep Dark or Lush Cave will find a sudden shock to the senses with the new Sulfur Caves biome. This biome forms naturally underground, and is immediately identified by its bands of striking yellow and deep red stone, with some scattered patches of glow lichen.

The setting is dynamic, with hazards and topography forming the centre of interest:

Sulfur Springs and Geysers: Players will be able to find bubbling sulfur springs on the surface of the Overworld, directly above this cave. Once you make it down into them, you discover the heart of the cave system with geothermal activity running rampant.

Sulfur Pools: They are shallow underground pools of water driven by the new and dangerous block, Potent Sulfur. Potent sulfur produces a continuous column of rising bubbles and a cloud of foul smelling sulfur gas when placed beneath up to four water source blocks. The green haze has an Nausea effect on the player and on nearby mobs.

Geyser Mechanics:  Potent Sulfur will produce an active geyser if it is placed directly above a Magma or Lava block while the Potent Sulfur is still inside of the water. Magma geysers will erupt at random, shooting a spectacular column of water particles up into the air with a powerful force that will launch any foolish player into the air.

Let’s meet the Mob: The Unpredictable Sulfur Cube

Perhaps the most notable addition of the Chaos Cubed update is the relatively new passive mob that can be found naturally in yellow and red caves, the Sulfur Cube. When left alone, these soft, squamish invertebrates take their time jumping around. But all of this is turned upside down when they meet block items.

The Sulfur Cube eats blocks for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It will immediately follow any player carrying an absorbable block and it actively searches for any loose item on the ground.

Once a Sulfur Cube vacuums a block and enters it into its core, the AI is completely disabled and it turns into a physical, highly interactive object. Held up in hand, the cube receives no fall damage, no player damage, and has no boats, though it will happily ride a minecart, and can be pushed around as a physics prop. All you have to do to get your block and enable the creature’s AI again is interact with the creature with a pair of Shears.

The Sulfur Cube can take on different “archetypes” when you feed it, radically changing its speed, ground friction, air drag and bounciness.

New Building Textures: Sulfur & Cinnabar

To help with the awesome new visual identity of this update, Mojang released two large stone blocks sets, Sulfur (flattering yellow) and Cinnabar (rich and deep red).

Both are complete architectural block sets. Players can know the raw variants and upgrade them to the Polished and Bricks variants. Beautifully detailed Chiseled variants are included for decorative pillars and borders; all aesthetic tiers are complete with matching Slabs, Stairs and Walls.

Moreover, Sulfur Spikes fill up the floors and ceilings of the biome. These sharp stalactites and stalagmites are geological counterparts to the Pointed Dripstone, and provide the caverns with a uniquely menacing appearance. Luckily, if stepped on, they are not harmful to the player, but if they are broken from a ceiling and fall directly onto an entity below, they pose a slight hazard.

Adjustments to audio and technical aspects

An overhaul of the atmosphere wouldn’t be complete without an update. Fingerspit, a famous video game composer, has also decided to join the Minecraft universe as a creator of five new beautiful background music tracks set to color the main menu and creative mode of the game (“Shores”, “Memories”, “Nightly”, “Home” and “Ebb”).

There is another chance to find a brand new music disc on the “Bounce” on abandoned Mineshaft Chest Minecarts that travel through the Sulfur Caves.

On the technical side, Java 26.2 adds experimental support for using the Vulkan API to render the game thanks to a new “Graphics API” option in Video Settings, which may result in improved performance profiles for compatible hardware systems. The community-based “Friends List” function is also now in the Online Options menu.

The Minecraft Launcher’s Chaos Cubed update has officially been released and can now be downloaded. Pick up your diamond pickaxe, load up some empty buckets and get ready for a beautiful, volatile adventure below.
