Mesh Sankranti (Mesha Sankranti) – 14 April (Tuesday)

Mesh Sankranti marks the beginning of the solar new year for many East Indian traditions and reflects the Sun’s transition into the Mesh Rashi (Aries) zodiac. It is a sacred harvest festival, as well, akin to Pohela Boishakh.

  • Offer water to the rising Sun while facing east. Add red flowers or rice to the water.
  • Charity (Daan)

Donate essentials like:

Krishna Baman Dwadashi (14 April 2026)

The Krishna Baman Dwadashi holiday is on the Dwadashi (12th) day of the Krishna Paksha (waning) Moon and is solely devoted to the worship of Vamana; Vishnu’s dwarf Avatar.

Significance:

  • The Vamana Avatar story demonstrates Vamana’s great humility and supreme wisdom to vanquish the demon king Bali.
  • Teaches devotees how to be more humble, act according to moral principles, and submit to the will of a higher order.
  • Helps in gaining spiritual growth and removing the false notion of self or ego.

Rituals/ Celebrational Activities:

Fasting – devotees may choose to either perform an absolute or partial fast usually for a 24-hour period, depending on one’s personal discretion; absolute fasting is referred to as Nirjala (no food/no water) or only water consumption; partial fasting is usually limited to fruits or milk consumption.

Morning Worship – A Devotee’s morning activities include:  

a) taking an early morning bath, and 

b) establishing a small altar with an image or idol of Vamana; and 

c) making offerings (Naivedya) to Vamana during one’s morning worship.

  • Fruits and simple sweets
  • Reading Sacred Story
  • Recite or listen to the story of Vamana and King Bali from scriptures like the Bhagavata Purana.
