Veteran Parliamentarian Dies Peacefully at Home

Patil died early in the morning in his home Devghar, where he spent the majority of his retired life. Family members reported that he was awake and receptive up until the end, soon before his death. He will be buried in Latur on Saturday with complete state honours, and high-ranking Congress leaders are likely to be present. The district authorities have also started to make arrangements on how to control huge masses of people since those who are in support of them, the workers of the party, and the people of the area are expected to come in large numbers to pay their last respects.

His death was soon announced in Maharashtra and Delhi, and political leaders, ex-colleagues and other people who recalled him as a strict yet quiet leader who was committed to parliamentary norms, paid their condolences.

A Long Political Journey Spanning Five Decades

The political career of Shivraj Patil began in the 1970s, when he joined the Lok Sabha from the Latur seat, which he would later represent seven times. His work in parliament was noted by industry, care of the order and a reputation for equitableness. Patil was a Speaker of the 10th Lok Sabha, 1991-1996, during which he earned a reputation of being a tough but polite person when managing the House in the politically turbulent years.

He had a long experience in administration. Throughout the various times Patil served as both Defence, Commerce, Science and Technology, and subsequently the most important of the Home Ministry in the first UPA government. His one-year tenure in the Union Home Minister in 2004 to 2008 was marked by some of the most challenging internal security problems in this country. He stepped down following the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks in which he had taken moral responsibility, in what was widely acknowledged on the political spectrum.

Role as Governor of Punjab and Administrator of Chandigarh

Following his resignation as a cabinet member of the Union, Patil remained in the public service as the Governor of Punjab and Administrator of the Union Territory of Chandigarh between the year 2010 and 2015. His rule also managed to preside over administrative proceedings in a very sensitive political environment and was credited to have a stabilizing factor to continue governance. His rule was characterized by a love of silent diplomacy, judicious interpretation of the Constitution and little opposition, the qualities which had moulded his political character throughout decades.

The memories of those who served him at this time recalled his systematic tact, and attention to detail, and maintenance of constitutional propriety.

Condolences Pour In Across Political Lines

The death of Patil brought about a cross-party outpouring of tributes. Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed him as a genuine and worthy leader who served India with a spirit of service and as one who had made a significant contribution to the legislative processes. Mallikarjun Kharge, the president of Congress, termed Patil as a pillar of the party whose experience was bound to be unparalleled. Rahul Gandhi remembered Patil and his unbending faith in democratic principles and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra remarked how he was full of grace, discipline and integrity in his life.

Regional party leaders also lamented, noting that Patil’s political career was indicative of how Indian parliamentary democracy had changed from the 1980s to the 2010s.
