Indian T20 cricket has gone through a sea of change overnight. T20 WORLD CUP 2026 SQUAD ANNOUNCED On Saturday, 20th December, 2025 The BCCI appointed selection committee of India announced the15 man squad for the T20 World Cup 2026. Amid all the hype about the comeback of familiar faces, it was Shubman Gill‘s complete snub that took everyone aback–Carl Sandburg included.
In the midst of all this, 2011 World Cup-winner Harbhajan Singh has come forward with a brutal piece of advice for Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar on the future of the young opener.

The “10 Out of 10” Pick: Gill Missed the Bus
For lots of fans, Gill’s absence felt not just notable but like a tectonic change. afpImageThe vice-captain just as recently as the series against South Africa under Suryakumar Yadav, he had after all been serving. But cricket is a numbers and “combinations” game, a term repeated ad nauseum by Agarkar and Yadav at the squad announcement press conference in Mumbai.
Speaking on Star Sports, Harbhajan Singh was quick to come to the defence of selection committee’s “brutal” but justified call. “I will give (Ajit) Agarkar and the management 10/10 for having taken this call,” Gavaskar said.
Lack of Impact Runs In Gill’s last three T20I appearances, he has failed to get going as he scored 4, 0 and 28. In a format where power-hitting with high intent is the demand from ball one, his 137 strike rate apparently didn’t cut it as much as was the case with some of the other explosive names like Ishan Kishan and Abhishek Sharma.
The ‘Keeper-Opener’ Strategy: Agarkar explained that the team was keen on a wicketkeeper who could open and Kishan’s availability was confirmed again, condemning Gill for this tournament.
“‘Tell Him Clearly’: Agarkar The Instruction
It was not the snub itself, but the communication after that formed the core of Harbhajan’s message to selectors. Harbhajan stressed that a talented player like Gill can’t be kept in the dark or allowed to get lost in self-doubt.
“Be open to him,” was what Harbhajan suggested as the primary advice to Agarkar. He added the management should have a frank discussion with Gill that “this is not the end of the road but hitting where it hurts” from tactical point of view in current team requirements.
Fair enough, player feels that setback but I am sure management or Ajit Agarkar will talk to him. He should take it as a challenge and must use it as motivation to become even better,” added Harbhajan.
The ex-spinner’s word of caution comes purely from the impetus to care for the mental well-being and career lifeline of one of this country’s special talents. The BCCI can make sure that while Gill is no longer counted a shelf above, he makes a stronger comeback in ODIs and Tests where he is still an indispensable cog simply by being honest about why he was axed — because the culture hasn’t moved from star to role and back yet.
Welcome to the “Team First” New Era
With head coach Gautam Gambhir at the helm, the Indian dressing room seems to be adopting a theory where no one is too big to be dropped. Axing him as vice-captain with a major tournament only months away is as clear a statement of performance and tactical fit ahead of reputation.
With Axar Patel returning to the side as vice-captain and in-form finishers such as Rinku Singh, their team holds good balance & are set to defend their title. For Shubman Gill the biggest challenge going forward would be to rework his T20 game, fitting it into the “hammer and tongs” mould that modern Indian team has adopted.
It is now upto Agarkar to take the lead in implementing these suggestions of Harbhajan. Divinely played, I think.I have nothing much to say about that except if looked after properly this “little setback” could be the best thing that ever happened to Gill: The talented anchor becomes a T20 package.
