India batter Suryakumar Yadav has supported Shubman Gill as the first-choice India opening batter in the current white-ball set-up, indicating that the young batter was a thoroughly deserving candidate, based on his form, temperament, and consistency. Talking about the recent trip to India, Suryakumar stated that the team administration thought Gill had deserved the position, performing at the highest level and being flexible.
Gill is also the new favorite to be the No. 1 opener, particularly in ODIs, and senior members of the top order, at least on some tours, have been sidelined. India is moving towards more youthful top-order mixes as the subsequent ICC cycles approach.

‘He earned it’
Suryakumar told television reporters that he was the one who deserved to take that first place. He has opened everywhere, and he has demonstrated his ability to adapt fast. So we are quite pleased with the way he is developing.
Gill has scored well in ODIs and T20s in the past two seasons, and this has put him among the highest run-getters in India and with multiple hundreds in home and foreign conditions.
Although the opening combinations have been tried repeatedly by the team, the 25-year-old has now emerged as a key component in India’s long-term planning for limited-overs formats.

Move not about seniority, says SKY
When questioned about the possibility of older players being sidelined in favor of the younger opener Suryakumar explained that decisions are being made on what would best fit India in particular formats and not rank.
It has nothing to do with senior or junior. The one who raises his hand and scores points on India will play. He has demonstrated to me that he can do that regularly, he said.

Competition remains intense
These selections of India have been a subject of controversy during the post-World Cup cycle, with Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Gill all having played at one time or another over the last 18 months.
This depth has also enabled flexibility and tough choice decisions to be made, according to analysts, particularly when it comes to scheduling all three formats together, and there is not much room to rotate.
However, Gill has become the most reliable ODI scorer and a strong competitor in T20s as the world’s next global ICC T20 nears.
Gill’s form is critical in future tournaments
The insiders of the team feel that with his current form, Gill has become a corner around which India can develop its top three. A versatile skill to play pace abroad and rotate strike against spin in Indian conditions has been highly praised on numerous occasions by the coaching staff.
As India will go through a transition stage within two years, Gill will likely be used to identify how the batting order will change, particularly when some of the older players become more selective in their format participation.
No final-lock call yet
At the same time, Suryakumar praised Gill; team sources report that the top-order combination is open to situation-based alteration. Rohit Sharma remains accessible as an opener in big tournaments, and Ishan Kishan and Yashasvi Jaiswal are still included in future planning, particularly in T20s.
The selectors are supposed to review the formats individually before moving on to the next series, as a number of older players will continue to be switched.
Focus shifts to next series
The next limited-overs assignment is the center of interest in India, where the management should experiment more with batting options and perfect top-order combinations. Gill, though, is the candidate for the first spot in the opening slot in the two ODIs and T20Is in the foreseeable future.
Even the dressing room of India appears to be unanimous that Shubman Gill has earned it so far, and the team is hoping that he will develop the role.
