Every March 15th, the world comes together for World Consumer Rights Day. Each year, countries across the globe recognize and celebrate this occasion by bringing attention to issues surrounding the protection and rights of consumers.

What Is World Consumer Rights Day?

World Consumer Rights Day is an international awareness day that aims to promote awareness and protection of the rights of all consumers. World Consumer Rights Day was first celebrated in 1983 by Consumers International (a global federation of consumer organizations), and is supported by numerous partners including the United Nations and many other international organizations.

The date of March 15th was chosen in order to recognize the historic address given from US President John F. Kennedy to the US Congress on March 15th, 1962; in this address, JFK outlined the first official definition of fundamental consumer rights.

2026 Theme

Each year, the global consumer movement chooses a theme that will focus worldwide attention on pressing consumer issues.

The theme for World Consumer Rights Day 2026 is:

“Safe Products, Confident Consumers” – which is a call to action for governments worldwide to improve product safety regulations, and to provide assurance to consumers that they can purchase and use products safely.

As part of the global market, individuals are increasingly concerned about unregulated and unsafe products. With this increased concern comes the need for improved regulatory frameworks and greater international collaboration to safeguard consumers’ rights, health and safety.

Importance of the Day

World Consumer Rights Day advances the following goals:

  • To increase awareness of the rights that all consumers possess and of the existence of unsafe or unfair marketplace practices.
  • To educate consumers of their rights (i.e., the right to be safe, the right to be informed, the right to choose, and the right to be represented).
  • To advocate for stronger enforcement of legislatively established consumer policies, including protection from unsafe products and unethical businesses.
  • To bring together consumer advocacy groups, businesses, all levels of government, and all segments of civil society in order to address the priorities identified in the consumer protection work of the group.

Everyone, no matter whether buying consumer goods and services in stores or online, is a consumer; therefore this day of recognition is significant to consumers around the world.

The rights of consumers are often promoted and include:

  • The right to be safe (protection from unsafe products and services).
  • The right to receive sufficient information regarding products and services.
  • The right to choose (to have a variety of products and services from which to choose).
  • The right to have their voice heard (to be adequately represented regarding their interests).

Collectively the above consumer rights are the foundation for consumer protection throughout the world.
