Mamata Banerjee has announced the start of two new programs in Kolkata: Pink Booths and the all-women Shining night watch teams. These are big steps toward making the city safer for women. The programs are meant to help women, especially those who travel or work late at night, and they will start right away.

It’s clear from the news that the city’s state government wants to make it safer for women, especially at night when they are more likely to be afraid.

Special Pink Booths will be set up at Kolkata’s busiest locations

Women can go to these help points to report crimes, get advice or ask for help in an emergency. It is thought that having female cops around will make it easier and more safe for women to ask for help.

The government put these booths in important places with lots of people to make sure that everyone could get to them.

“Shinning” Night Patrol Teams Made Up of Only Women

Along with the Pink Booths, the city police have also created “Shining” patrol teams, which are special night watch units made up of only women cops. These groups will be walking along important roads and places that working women often use late at night.

The police will go through the city between 8 pm and 2 am, going along busy and important roads. Their job is to make sure that police respond quickly to calls for help and to keep a strong police presence at night.

Officials think that having women police officers patrolling will make people less likely to commit crimes and give women who commute alone peace of mind. The project is mainly for people who work late and need safe transport to and from work.

Focus on women who work and people who commute at night

In her speech, the Chief Minister said that the new rules are meant to protect working women who often get home late. Since more women are working and more people are working the night shift, safety at night has become more important.

Both of these steps will be put in place starting Saturday evening, according to the Chief Minister. They will be lead by the Kolkata Police. The Pink Booths will be staffed by only women police officers and will be open at a number of busy intersections from 5 p.m. until midnight. Women can go straight to these booths if they need help in an emergency, want to file a report, or want to get advice about security.

Officials said the booths are meant to be easy-to-reach support points in busy places where women in need can get instant help and encouragement.

Boosting trust in the public

The start of these safety steps for women is part of a larger attempt to boost trust in law enforcement. As part of the second plan, the all-women mobile patrol team called “Shining” will keep an eye on the main roads in the city from 8 pm to 2 am. A lot of attention will be paid to the EM Bypass and other roads that working women often take late at night. The security team is supposed to do more obvious police work and quickly answer any calls for help at night.

The Chief Minister said that Kolkata has long been known as one of the safest cities in the country. She hoped that the Pink Booths and the “Shining” watch would help women feel safer and keep the city’s safety image.

The plans come at a time when Supratim Sarkar has just taken over as Police Commissioner, taking over from Manoj Verma. Since taking office, Sarkar has increased the number of night naka checks and has been personally overseeing how law and order are maintained at major city crossings.

The state administration wants trained women officers to patrol Kolkata at night to reassure women. Once the initiatives begin, everyone will monitor to see how successfully they make women travellers safer and develop trust with the city’s police.
