To countless people, the morning routine of scrolling through an edited feed of morning coffees, travel views and trending reels was summarily halted on March 3, 2026. During what, so far, seems like a series of technical hiccups of the Meta ecosystem, thousands of users around the world were left with blank white screens where they expected their online life to be, or with the infamous Couldn’t Refresh Feed banner stare.
Although it has not been a complete blackout on every single user, the impact has been so much that it has created ripple effects of frustration on other social systems such as X (formerly Twitter) and Threads as users were rushing to confirm that it was not just their Wi-Fi that was breaking down.
An Empty Grids and Morning of Ghost Notifications
These problems started to spiral during the early mornings on Tuesday with a dramatic rise in reportages in the outage monitoring websites such as Downdetector. More than 12,000 incidents were registered by 9.30 IST with most of the complaints focusing on the fact that the mobile application could not load new content.
The break-down was in distinct frustrating forms:
- The Vanishing Act: Some users stated that they could open the app, but their profile pictures and bubbles with stories were blank grey circles.
- The Comment Ghosting: In its other manifestations in recent Meta outages, commenters noticed that they could write comments on the posts, but the corresponding comment box remained empty the moment their message was posted.
- Delay of Direct Messages: A large percentage of the Power User base reported that the Direct Messages were trapped in the sending loop, which is a big bottleneck to users of the platform to use it in carrying out business and communicating with clients.
Some of them include Ananya Sharma, a freelance photographer who was in Delhi but initially believed that her account had been hacked. I was able to see my old posts but nothing new would load. In this world of my portfolio being on this app, an hour of down time is like the doors of my studio being locked.

Why Now? This is the Strain on the Infrastructure of Meta
Although today’s glitch is yet to be published in a detailed post-mortem by Meta, tech pundits are pointing at a common suspect: The AI Integration Strain. At the start of 2026, Meta was aggressive about deploying its Llama 4 integrated assistant in Instagram and Facebook. It is this profound internalization such that whenever you search to find a reel or attempt to edit the photo, a lot of background processing is occurring. This further complicates making the pipes of internet more liable to clogging.
Moreover, the current outage is accompanied by a gigantic world-wide traffic surge as a result of the Holi festival celebrations in India and the current Chandra Grahan (Lunar Eclipse) debates. Attempts to upload high-resolution video by millions of users at the same time can lead even the most robust servers in the world to a so-call session-control bottleneck as engineers refer to it.
