The atmosphere in the silent streets of 1 Anney Marg, the official house on the Chief Minister of Bihar, this March 2026, is full of the burden of history. This speech has been identified with Nitish Kumar the man who reinvented the identity of Bihar, wading through the most perilous waters of the coalition politics, and who has been dubbed Vikas Purush (Development Man).

But to-day, when the sun is setting over the Ganges, the murmurs at Patna have culminated. Nitish Kumar, the longest serving Chief Minister in the history of Bihar is said to be planning to submit his nomination at the Rajya Sabha.

The Silent Incarnation of a God

The news hit at the time when the colours of Holi were disappearing in the streets. The political machine of the state was overheating at the time when the masses rejoiced. According to sources in the Janata Dal (United), the decision though shocking to many, is long overdue. Nitish Kumar is a 75-year old man who has experienced it all, a ten-term Chief Minister, a stint as a Union Minister, a record of social juggernauts that empowered the so-called Extremely Backward Classes (EBC) and women unlike many others have ventured to.

The transfer to the Rajya Sabha Is being billed as a retirement, but a tactical withdrawal to the national arena. But to the common people of Muzaffarpur or Bhagalpur, it is a patriarchal exit. Nitish was the constant whether you agreed with his regular political pivots of Paltu Ram or not.

A New Dynasty? The Rise of Nishant Kumar

The most humanizing aspect of this change perhaps is the birth of a name that is not commonly heard of in the political world of Bihar: Nishant Kumar. The son of Nitish, who during all decades of his life was the so-called invisible heir, not attracted by the media attention prevalent among the children of Indian politicians, is going to be actively involved in politics, which is going to happen this Thursday.

It has been reported that there is a well-designed succession plan. As the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to assume the Chief Minister chair in its name in the first instance, Nishant Kumar is a likely inducement as a Deputy Chief Minister. It is a scene–a father coming in to be the elder statesman of the Upper House as his son, an engineer by profession of quiet habits, comes into the fire of the administration of Bihar.

The BJP’s New Frontier

In the case of BJP, it is the time they have been waiting since the early 1990s. Although the party was the most dominant one in national spread, it never had a chance to be on the same level of dominance as Nitish in Bihar. With his shift to Delhi, the BJP is at last to take direct rule of the state.

There is a lot of speculation as to who is going to spearhead this new chapter. The party is even said to be seeking a face that would be able to uphold the fine caste balance that Nitish mastered. Samrat Choudhary, Vijay Kumar Sinha and Dilip Jaiswal are some of the names that are being discussed in the topmost levels of the meetings with Union Home Minister Amit Shah present.

State in transition: the human cost

Out of the spreadsheets of seat sharing and cabinet berths, the citizens of Bihar are anxiously looking on with hope. During the tenure of Nitish Kumar, law and order have dramatically improved- a dark distant past to many. He constructed roads, introduced electricity in the far flung hamlets and introduced schoolgirl cycles.

But the reminder that the human burden of two decades in the most arduous political stage of the world was the cause of his departure is the so-called fading memory and health considerations mentioned by insiders as the factor that led him to leave. It is one thing to have a leader of his caliber step aside to recognize the lapse of time.
