This decision, which has jolted the Indian expatriate population, was officially declared by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on March 15, 2026, and it has canceled all pending Class 12 board examinations in the West Asia region. It is a move that was motivated by a growing geopolitical crisis which entailed regional conflicts and it was very decisive as it put to an end the consecutive postponements that had left thousands of students in the state of academic suspension over more than two weeks.

The news to the almost 18,000 students of the Gulf is one of deep relief and silent fear. The cancellation applies to CBSE-affiliated schools of Bahrain, Iran, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.

The Breaking Point: How Delay had become Cancellation

In the initial two weeks of March, the board had been trying to manoeuvre in the turbulence of the area in rolling postponements. Examinations were postponed by 48 or 72 hours with circulars being issued nearly every day as the situation on the ground changed. But by the middle of March the viability of keeping a safe and uniform test situation was not tenable.

The official circular of the Dr. Sanyam Bhardwaj, Controller of Examinations, stated that the board considered the responses of Indian diplomatic missions, school leaders, and local authorities, then, it decided that the safety of the students could not be assured anymore.

The life of our students is what matters the most. Since the geopolitical situation is extraordinary, and local logistics are disrupted, we cannot in good faith request students to travel to centers in such conditions, one of the high-ranking CBSE officials said.

The ruling is also proceeded by a similar action of the Council of Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) that cancelled its ICSE and ISC exams in the UAE a few days earlier.

A Region in Flux: The Implications of it on Schools and Students

In West Asia, there are more than 150 schools that are affiliated with the CBSE and cater to an enormous number of Indian professionals. To such families, the Class 12 boards have become more than an exam, it is the Golden Ticket to university admissions in India or even in foreign countries.

However, the students had prior to the crisis intensifying, done several of the core papers such as Physical Education, Physics, Accountancy, and Chemistry between February 17 and February 28. Nevertheless, such important topics as Mathematics, Biology, and different language papers that were to be written in the traditional form in mid-March and early April will never be composed in the conventional format.

The Human Factor: Strength in the Time of Crisis

The voices of the students who have been doing the past two years to get ready to this moment are behind the official circulars. In Dubai, Ananya, an aspiring engineer who is 17 years old explained that the air in the city is suffocating.

The next big question is now: How will these students be graded?

CBSE has made it clear that another mode of Declaration of Results will be announced soon. Although the details are yet to be decided, it will likely be a board governed by a weighted assessment framework that was utilized in the 20202021 pandemic disruptions. This likely includes:

  • Performance in Finished Exams: Marks in the papers, which have been already performed in February.
  • Internal Assessments: Practical, project and internal school assignment scores.
  • Pre-Board Consistency: An examination of the student performance in school-level mock examinations to make the end grade of the student represents their potential.

In addition, the board has indicated that a so-called Improvement Option can be offered later in the year, in case the situation in the region normalizes, and students who are not pleased with their calculated scores will be able to take a physical exam.
