In decades the history of Indian sport has been narrated through the prism of passion a billion fans hypnotized by transistor radios or flickering television sets, who have one common, throbbing heart that is cricket. However, nowadays, that passion has become a giant. The Indian sports economy is officially estimated to have reached the 2 billion (₹18,864 crore) mark according to the 15th edition of the WPP Media report titled Sporting Nation: Building a Legacy released on March 23, 2026.

This is not a victory on the score board, it is a structural change. Since 2021, the industry has almost doubled in size and its compound annual growth rate (CAGR) has been ruthless at about 19%. Indian sports have grown to be a year-long commercial powerhouse that is not ready to decimate due to the occasional seasonal spikes that are characteristic of the sector.

The Digital Hub of Growth: Digital and the IPL Effect

The focus of this 2 billion upsurge is a change in the way we consume games that we adore. Media and expenditures amount to a staggering 51 percent of the overall industry value, which will go to ₹9,571 crore in 2025.

TV is still ruling in Indian living rooms with more than 5,100 crore but the digital scene is the place that is shifting the needle. Last year alone, digital advertising had increased by 24%. We are no witnesses any longer; we are participants, watching live statistics on second screens, voting in fan polls, and being involved in AI-controlled content.

The Anchor: Unshaken Hold of Cricket

One cannot talk about the Indian sports economy without mentioning about the elephant in the stadium. Cricket still holds 89 percent of the entire revenue. All the commercial interests revolve around the Indian Premier League (IPL).

IPL team next became the first sport to cross 1000 crore in team sponsorship in 2025. The market still showed its strength even after the regulatory withdrawal of “Real Money Gaming” (RMG) giants such as Dream11 and My11Circle who had been competing in jersey slots. Conventional industries such as FMCG, car manufacturers, and new technology giants such as Google (with its Gemini AI platform) intervened at an even greater valuation.

The book The Rise of the Multi-Sport Nation Beyond the Boundary

Whereas cricket is the queen, a 2026 report points to a silent revolution in disciplines other than cricket. The Sporting Nation is finally starting to appear more eclectic.

Recovery in the Olympic Proportions

International achievement such as the recent victories of India in the champions trophy and women OD world cup has generated halo effect to other sports.

  • Kabaddi and Football: These associations are no longer in the stage of being an emerging league but are already established commercial entities with strong loyal and localized fan bases.
  • The Women Sports Boom: The Women premier league (WPL) and the accomplishment of the women national cricket team have made the female athletes one of the most requested brand ambassadors in the nation.

The Human Factor: Celebrity Endorsing and the Influencer Athlete

Among the most humanizing facts about this 2 billion milestone is the fact that the number of athlete endorsements is expected to change and hit 1,350 crore in 2025.

It is no longer important to have the three best cricketers taking all the contracts. The brands are seeking relatability today. It can be an Olympic javelin competitor, a badminton on the rise or a WPL sensation; they are being marketed not only because of their ability on the court, but their story off of the court.

According to the report, the endorsement value has increased by 10.3 percent due to brands desiring to relate with the Grit and Glory stories that the Gen Z and millennial consumer groups will understand in India.

Infrastructure and Innovation 2036 Vision

There is an evident legislative and governmental drive promoting the economic boom. Since the Union Budget 2026-27 has set aside a historic 4,479.88 crore of the budgetary funds on sports, the agenda has changed to:

  • Manufacturing Excellence: A special purpose ₹500 crore fund to enhance local sports manufacturing in such clusters as Jalandhar and Meerut.
  • Sports Science: This idea involves the merger of performance monitoring and biomechanics using AI to guarantee the Indian athletes meet the international standards.

This funding is directed towards one big ambitious plan, namely, equipping India with the equipment to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games and the 2036 Olympics.
