The dream of the digital assistant was a nice voice, which would turn on a timer or tell you the weather, decades. We stopped with the with-help-you-can-rely-on-me suggestions offered by Clippy and started to talk about the chatbots that could write poetry and code.
Having introduced its most recent update to its Claude Cowork and Claude Code, the AI has not only learned to talk, but has learned to work as well. It is not about Claude handing you a recipe, but Claude just opening up your browser, clicking into your grocery app, and then adding the ingredients to your cart and just waiting until your, click to buy. It is a transition between an assistant who thinks to an agent who does.
Chatbot to Digital Operator: What Is Changing?
This update is focused on the abandonment of sandboxed AI. Claude used to exist in a tab or a particular app, only in the data that you inputed into it. Now, as a preview of a research to your macOS users on the Pro and Max plans, Claude is capable of interacting with your desktop environment.
The Power of “Computer Use”
Claude is able to see your screen unlike conventional automations which, to operate, need to use elaborate recipes of If This, Then That (IFTTT). It captures fast screen shots, cracks the buttons and the text and the icons, and then clicks the cursor and types similar to the way a human being would.
- App Agnostic: It does not require a special software plug-in in each application. In case you can see it on your Mac, Claude probably can communicate with it.
- Fallback Logic: Claude is clever enough to make his priorities on direct connectors (such as that to Slack or Google Calendar). When these are not offered it is manual screen control, or literally clicking your way through your work process.

The Remote Command: “Dispatch”
The Dispatch feature is probably the most humanizing aspect of this update. You are in the soccer match of a daughter, or you are in a traffic jam and you find out that you forgot to send a briefing document. Now you can send a message to Claude in your phone: Hey, can you share the pitch deck of the ‘Project X’ on my desktop in a PDF format and attach it to my calendar invites of tomorrow at 9.00 AM? Then Claude gets up at home and he wakes up your Mac, goes down and locates the file, does the conversion and takes care of the logistics and you remain in your real life.
The Coworker Experience: Live Case Studies
There is a reason why Anthropic is making this a research preview and that is that it is powerful and yet needs a degree of trust that we do not currently have in software. Nonetheless, the preliminary protests are simply disruptive to the regular white-collar workflow.
- The Morning Triage: You can program Claude to go through your inbox first thing in the morning at 7:00 AM, to sort the fires to which you are supposed to respond, and even write replying in your unique voice, before you have laid a hand on your first cup of coffee.
- The Spreadsheet Slog: We have all been victims of it- adding information to an Excel sheet by neglecting to copy the data from a PDF. Claude is now able to manage this soul-sucking task by putting the apps side by side and copying the data over manually so that the formatting remains easy to read and modify by humans.
- Development & Testing: Claude Code Developers can now develop the AI to spawn a local server, run a battery of tests and capture screenshots of any UI bugs the AI discovers .

Privacy, Security and the “Agentic” Risk
As soon as a software is provided with keys to your mouse and keyboard, the discussion of the safety is bound to arise. This has not been taken lightly by Anthropic, which is known as the Constitutional AI approach.
The Guardrails
Anthropic has instated permission based architecture. Claude will be unable to simply make a choice to open your banking app. You need to explicitly authorize it to access certain applications, and you can make a so-called blocklist of folders or programs that are strictly prohibited.
