India’s sports community is shocked by claims that Dronacharya awardee coach Naval Singh has been harassed. Paralympic winner Neeraj Chopra and Paralympic javelin star Sumit Antil are two athletes who have spoken out.
When claims of abuse by a famous javelin teacher came to light, they shook the Indian sports community to its core. Athletes like Para athlete Sumit Antil and star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra have said that their coach, Naval Singh, physically and verbally abused them and used bad language all the time.
The players sent an official protest to the Indian Sports Authority on April 10. The issue was also handled by people from the Paralympic Committee of India. In this case, Antil has also gotten support from Chopra.
What really took place?
On Friday, Antil made serious accusations against Naval, the teacher who won the Dronacharya award and is currently training Sachin Yadav. The swimmer in the Paralympic javelin has said that the teacher, who was drunk, was mentally harassing her and using a lot of bad language.
“As an athlete, I’ve always been honest, and I don’t want to get into any trouble.” But this isn’t the first time I’ve tried to explain things to teacher Naval Singh. It’s past the point of my patience.
“When he’s drunk, he sends us random recordings of himself abusing us and our families.” “He acts this way when competitions are coming up,” Antil told The Bridge.
In the last email that the source saw, Antil said that Coach Naval had verbally abused and mentally harassed him over and over again. He also said he was rude to the athletes, their families, and other athletes, including Neeraj Chopra, Navdeep Singh, Sandeep Chaudhary, and Arshad Nadeem, a Pakistani javelin thrower.
“Over a long period of time, his behaviour has caused me to repeatedly experience verbal abuse, humiliation, and mental harassment.” The language used was very insulting, not just to athletes but also to our families. It included hurtful comments about our moms and even well-known athletes like Neeraj Chopra, Navdeep Singh, and Sandeep Chaudhary, he said.

Antil also said that the situation has had a terrible effect on his mental health, safety, and sense of worth as an athlete. He is upset even though he is doing his best to serve his country.

Chopra offers help
Chopra, an athlete who has won two Olympic medals, has also spoken out about what’s going on and is standing with his fellow sportsmen. He also said Naval’s comments were “inappropriate” and “disgraceful,” and he wants something to be done about it.
“Using abusive language toward me, my family, and other athletes goes against all rules of professionalism and common sense.” I am shocked and upset to hear such hurtful things said about me. It is unacceptable for someone in charge to act in this way, and it brings shame to the whole sports system. “I urge the Sports Authority of India to act right away and decisively,” Chopra wrote, the report said.
Sandeep Chaudhary, winner of the Arjuna Award, and Navdeep Singh, current Paralympic champion, have both had similar problems with the teacher and said he was acting in similar ways.
The answer from SAI causes a stir
After the athletes spoke out against teacher Naval, the Sports Authority of India admitted that Antil had sent a report about being verbally abused. They also said that athletes like Chopra agreed with the para athlete’s complaint.
That being said, they made it clear that the teacher is not part of SAI and is working with the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) on a national teaching camp.
“A complaint has been received from Paralympic gold medallist Sumit Antil, who says that Coach Mr. Naval Singh has verbally abused him.” Other players, like Neeraj Chopra, have also backed up the charge.
“The coach in question is not working for SAI; he or she is training another top athlete as part of an AFI-run National Coaching Camp,” a SAI official told India Today.

Antil hits back with a strong note
In reaction to SAI’s answer, Antil attacked the national sports group and asked how he could be getting NSF money and using training facilities even though he wasn’t working there. The para athlete also said that their reaction was “inappropriate” and asked them to be held responsible.
“SAI said something very careless when they said that he is not our employee. But he is teaching people at your place, and SAI and AFI are paying for it with NSF money. When you do everything, how can you not be responsible for this?” Antil told PTI.
There has been a lot of talk about how India’s sports administration is not accountable since the event. It has also brought together athletes from different sports. For example, Vinesh Phogat, a former boxer who is now a politician, criticised the government for doing nothing while the honour of medal-winning athletes is still at risk.
The incident showed that India’s sports system has holes and problems with responsibility. After the players spoke out about it, the government will be under more pressure to do something.
