Sweet, innocent, and love stories are always welcome, especially now, when Hindi movies are obsessed with violent, bloody, and testosterone-fueled action movies. But don’t think that something is simple because it’s shallow or lacks depth.

Ek Din, Sai Pallavi and Junaid Khan’s most recent movie

As long as you can suspend your fantasy, the movie will work. Its weakest point is that the story is told in a straight line, which makes it boring. The creators want to keep things light and clean so much that they never really deal with the characters’ inner mess.

The story of Ek Din is about two coworkers, Dinesh Kumar Srivastav and Meera Ranganathan. And now let’s go back to the very beginning, to the opening scene. We get to see a filmy montage that shows how normal and unremarkable our male lead is.

This video doesn’t seem to be building up to what’s coming next

It doesn’t say anything about his character. It sounds more like a tribute to Bollywood action pictures. There is a slow-motion scene of Ajay Devgn getting out of his police car in Singham. There is also a scene of Hrithik Roshan walking stylishly in War. In Main Hoon Na, Shah Rukh Khan is set against the wind and leaves spinning around him, and Tiger Shroff does his famous backflip.

Once this is done, Ek Din will start. The two of them both work at Mycon, a tech company in Noida. The head of Dinesh’s team calls him a “gold standard gadha,” and he himself says that no one can see him, especially Meera, who he loves. Meera sees Dinesh for the first time when her laptop breaks down and she needs an IT expert to help her.

They become close over Snow-Miku, a Japanese doll he finds on her desk, and their strange dreams. Nakul Bhasin, Meera’s boss, is about to get a divorce, or so he says. Meera is seeing him. Nakul tells the team one day that they will all be going to Hokkaido, Japan, Meera’s dream vacation spot, for a business trip.

That’s when they decide to stay two more days until Nakul’s wife shows up out of the blue. Meera sees that the pair is really together. She drinks too much at a pub because she is sad, and then she gets caught in a snowstorm and goes into hypothermic shock. As soon as she wakes up, she finds out that she has TGP, which makes her forget everything for a day.

That day, Dinesh gets Meera as his girlfriend, just as he had hoped after praying for it in front of a fortune bell. Until she finds out the truth, Meera believes him. The rest of it is easy to guess. Still, the filmmakers (Sunil Pandey, Sneha Desai, and Spandan Desai) keep teasing us until the very end. It’s so bad that the two hours and five minutes of running time feel like forever.

The writing is so dull, Meera is one of her weaker efforts to date. At one point, Dinesh says that Meera is “Apple-only territory or Android-only territory with jagah sync hone waali.” That being said, you know that these are just words and don’t back up what makes her special.

Kunal Kapoor, who plays Nakul, is also lost

He is relegated to the background after setting off the anticlimax. You ask, “Is there anything good about it?” Yes, as long as you can stay glued to your seat until the end of the second half. There are times when Meera and Dinesh are together that are touching and warm.

In an uncomfortable scene, he tries to ask her to marry him in a Noida grocery store. That’s when Junaid shines. Another scene shows Meera being honest with Dinesh about how she feels about him and wants to tell him that she loves him.

Aside from these random low points, this movie feels like a waste of time and, more importantly, an insult to Sai because it doesn’t use her full range and energy. To sum up, save Ek Din for kisi aur din.
