Assi is not a loud action courtroom drama; it is a low-burning conflict-based courtroom drama that required Taapsee to adjust her acting approach accordingly.
Writing & Direction: Strong Foundation, Uneven Pace
This film’s screenplay tackles many serious and difficult themes including; the role of gender dynamics in the justice system and the ethical dilemmas faced by lawyers in the modern world. The screenplay is strong; particularly in the courtroom scene with smart exchanges of dialogue that are both believable and authentic, and well-researched to boot!
In the second half of this motion picture, the pacing travels slower than in the first half. Some of the minor character storylines could have been tightened to create suspense regarding plot development. However, the story comes to a climactic point of resolution in the argument, which happens to be predictable.
Despite this, the direction will keep you focused on the dramatic plot unfolding throughout the film. The director keeps the camera focused on the actors’ faces instead of the theatrics; therefore, focusing primarily on the emotional truths of the characters involved in these dramatic scenes versus providing you with cinematic spectacles.
The Supporting Cast is Strong Enough!
The supporting performances are well acted to support Taapsee. The opposing council has given a restrained performance that is believable and is not a caricature of most attorneys. The judge is a character that portrays the authority of the court with ‘balance’ and provides a credible backdrop to the film.
While none of the supporting characters outshine Taapsee, they all provide a believable world in which the main character’s struggle travels through.
Technical Crafting of This Film is Simple But Effective
The film is visually grammatically simple and communicates its visual content without exploration or difficulty. The production design has created a ‘realistic’ representation of an Indian courtroom with its muted, earthy-colored walls, stacked legal case files, quiet and tense silences within the court.
One of Assi’s most powerful elements is the use of silence to heighten the tension in the courtroom. The film features minimal background music, allowing the audience to focus on the drama.
While the editing of the trial scenes is fairly sharp, the editing of the personal history sections may feel a little bit overextended. The use of close-up shots creates an emotional atmosphere during the testimony and closing arguments.
The film’s themes are also worth considering. Assi explores:
- Will the law actually deliver the appropriate level of justice?
- How have past experiences influenced future professional inclination?
- What will it cost to stay in conformity with an institution that is not in agreement?
