People think that the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) is one of the biggest government funded health care programs in the world. The program covers up to ₹5 lakh in medical costs for each family each year and helps pay for care at government and private hospitals participating in the program. Reports also say that people over the age of 70 can now get health care perks through the plan.

The program has become a big help for families struggling financially, but many people who benefit from it still don’t know that it doesn’t cover all diseases, treatments or medical procedures. Health experts say it’s important to know about these exceptions so that you don’t get confused in situations or when you go to the hospital.

Treatments for OPD and regular check ups are not covered

One of the biggest problems with the Ayushman Bharat plan is that it usually doesn’t cover outpatient department (OPD) visits. This means that people who go to hospitals for routine checkups, minor illnesses, prescriptions or follow up visits without staying overnight may have to cover their own costs.

In many cases, routine check ups, diagnostic screenings, blood tests, X-rays, CT scans, and MRIs that are not done in a hospital are also not covered. The plan is mostly about secondary and tertiary health care, not regular medical costs.

Experts say this is still a big problem for families with low incomes because daily medicines and outpatient care make up a big part of healthcare costs in India.

Cosmetic surgeries and lifestyle changes that aren’t covered

Cosmetic or beauty treatments performed solely to make someone look better are generally not covered under Ayushman Bharat. Things like liposuction, Botox, facelifts, tattoo removal, anti aging treatments and breast implants are not covered by the plan.

However, crashes, burns, or major medical problems may still cover cosmetic treatments if doctors deem them medically necessary.

Aside from cosmetic procedures, this does not cover lifestyle based treatments or optional surgeries. Medical professionals say the government program is primarily for necessary medical care and support for people with serious illnesses, not for extra treatments.

IVF, fertility treatments  and vaccinations are also not covered

The majority of the time, PM-JAY does not cover treatments for infertility. Procedures like IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation) and other assisted reproduction methods are usually not covered by the plan unless specifically allowed by certain health plans.

The cost of vaccines is another important exception. Routine immunisations, flu shots, hepatitis shots, and other similar preventive medical care are not covered under Ayushman Bharat when administered in private hospitals.

In the same way, most insurance plans don’t cover circumcision for kids younger than two years old for reasons other than medical or religious ones. Support may only be provided for treatments that are physically necessary due to an illness or accident.

Analysts in health care say many people think the plan covers all medical costs, but preventive care and pregnancy related services are still not covered.

Long term care and dental procedures can be confusing

Most of the time, Ayushman Bharat benefits don’t cover routine dental care such as fillings, root canal therapy, dental implants or cosmetic work. But under some plans, treatment for accidents, cancers or serious injuries requiring hospitalisation may be covered.

A lot of the time, long term hospital stays without actual care are also not paid. Vitamins, nutrients, and nutrition items may not be eligible for reimbursement unless they are used as part of an approved treatment plan.

Some users are also worried about extra fees, long wait times for papers, and not knowing what hospitals can legally charge under the plan. In an emergency, many people have trouble fully understanding which services are covered and which aren’t.

Beneficiaries are told to check their coverage before getting treatment

Healthcare experts say that people seeking treatment should always check whether their insurance covers the illness, surgery, or medical package before they start. Patients should also check whether the hospital is officially on the PM-JAY list to avoid payment issues in the future.

Even with the exceptions, Ayushman Bharat continues to help millions of families across the country with the costs of serious diseases, treatments, cancer treatment, heart disease, and hospital stays. The plan still covers a lot of serious illnesses and is one of India’s biggest state health care programs.
