President of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, Helen Hoehne, explained why the choice was made saying it celebrated Bhatt for his “extraordinary contributions to international cinema and more importantly, he is one reason we are all here today in Cannes.”.

Sharing the stage of honor was distinguished Tunisian actress Hend Sabry, who took home the Omar Sharif Award for Excellence and Dedication to Arab Cinema.
