In a tough Pool B match of the Hockey World Cup qualifiers, India beat Uruguay. The game stayed close the whole time, and an exciting late equalizer from Uruguay brought it to 1–1 at the end of regular time. India, on the other hand, remained calm during the shootout and won 3–1, a big win in the group stage.

India won most of the game because they had better ball control and offensive play. Uruguay didn’t give up, though, and the game went to a shootout before the Indian team finally won.

India Gets Off to a Good Start

India came out strong at the start and controlled the early going. The team quickly moved the ball and looked smart on offence, putting pressure on the Uruguayan defence right away. Uruguay had their first penalty corner of the game in the 5th minute, but they missed the goal. The attack didn’t get a good shot, so the chance was lost.

India kept stepping up its attempts until it made a breakthrough in the 2nd quarter. In the 18th minute, the team won a penalty corner and tried a variation close to the goalpost, but the Uruguayan goalie made a good save to stop the shot.

India scored the first goal just one minute later. India took the lead when Manisha hit a strong shot from far away in the 19th minute. It beat the goalie and was well-deserved.

India has the ball but misses some chances

India continued to control the ball and strike after they took the lead. The team often entered the other team’s circle and created several goal-scoring chances. India won two penalty corners in a row in the third quarter. These chances gave the team a good chance to get ahead and make it impossible for Uruguay to win.

India tried to score another goal, but Uruguay’s defenders stood strong and stopped them. The missed chances kept the game close and kept Uruguay in the game, even though India was clearly the better team overall.

Uruguay makes a strong push in the last quarter

In the last quarter, Uruguay’s attacks got stronger. More pressure was put on the field higher up, and the team tried to make more chances inside the Indian circle. Uruguay got another penalty corner in the 49th minute. The Indian goalie moved quickly and made a key save to protect the lead.

As the game was coming to a close, Uruguay did something brave: they took off the goalie and added an extra player to the field to help the attack.

In the very end of the game, the move paid off. In the last few seconds, Uruguay won a penalty kick, which Justina Arregui scored in the 60th minute to tie the game. The late goal tied the game at 1–1 and sent it to a shootout.

When the shots are fired, India stays calm

India stayed cool during the shootout, even after conceding an exciting equaliser. Under pressure, the players were sure of themselves and did a good job with what they were trying to do. India had a big lead in the shootout after Purnima Yadav, Ishika, and Kanika Siwach all scored their shots.

Nidhi, India’s goalie, was very important at this point. Uruguay tried to score, but she made three important saves that stopped them. She played well, which helped India win 3–1 in the shootout after the game ended 1–1 in normal time.

India gets a big win

For India, the win was important because it moved them up in Pool B. While defending, the team played well for most of the game and kept their cool after giving up a last second goal.

India had several chances to score during the game, but they couldn’t capitalise. When it mattered most, though, the players kept their cool. Their play also showed how important the goalie is; Nidhi’s saves in the shootout were the deciding factor in India’s victory.
