Russian President Vita4ctaamir Putin’s entry in New Delhi for the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit was made in a striking manner that got the world talking; no, not the colossal armoured limousine that accompanied him, but a rather economical one – white Toyota Fortuner SUV.

In a remarkable and unprecedented departure from protocol, Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally met President Putin at the Palam Airport and both leaders eschewed travelling in their man-proof official rides (his usual Range Rover for Pm Modi or his Aurus Senat, better known as ‘moving fortress’ for the Russian president) to opt for a spin together in the white Fortuner till PM’s compound.
Beyond Protocol: The Semiotics of the SUV
For two heads of state who enjoy the utmost personal security on the planet, driving together in a relatively unarmoured, non-standard car is an obvious message about personal camaraderie and reciprocal trust.
The Personal Bond
This act was not unprecedented. The last time the two leaders had travelled in a vehicle together during their foreign visits was at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Tianjin, China, back in September 2025. And it was in that meeting President Putin, himself drove PM Modi to his Aurus Senat. By replicating the move on Indian soil and, more importantly, performing it in vehicles that are standard for security convoys (the Fortuner Sigma 4 MT), the two leaders sent a powerful message about an age-old friendship that is also comfortable enough to withstand degrees of geopolitical complexity.
‘The warmth was evident from the outset, with PM Modi actually breaking protocol and receiving President Putin at the tarmac of Ahmedabad Ritual airport with his signature warm bear hug – a gesture normally reserved for special state visits,’ it added.
A Message to the World Viewing all this through a wider lens, Francis is in effect telling U.S. voters who care about the future of representative democracy and the role of a free press that we’re being watched by an entire world that relies on us to combat assaults on its institutions and values.
The decision to do so in favor of relying on the ostensibly unsophisticated Fortuner also sent a clear message to Western capitals.
Geopolitical Context: The visit took place amid tensions over the world, especially those related to Ukraine conflict and a time of difficult relations between India and US due to US tariffs on Indian imports and its position on India’s purchase of Russian crude.
India’s Balancing Act By showing so much personal comfort and strategic common ground with the Russian leader, India reinforced its claim to be pursuing a foreign policy of autonomy. The image presented was that of a strong and “time-tested” partnership, able to withstand global political headwinds.
After the Drive: The Crucial Programme
The “car-ride diplomacy” were merely a precursor to the high-stakes conversations. President Putin’s almost 27-hour visit has been planned as a tight one with the goal of bolstering the “Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership” both countries share.
Defence and Trade: Key defence deals including the purchase of additional S-400 missile system and other important military hardware are on top of the agenda. Officials are also seeking a plan to address the growing trade deficit emanating from India’s large purchase of Russian oil.
Strategic Partnership: Numerous deals are expected in areas like energy security, movement of Indian workers to Russia and logistics support between the two countries within a framework of defence cooperation. The leaders are also expected to talk about the Programme for the Development of Strategic Areas of Russian-Indian Economic Cooperation until 2030.
Global Issues Key discussions include global geopolitical issues, with an update from President Putin on efforts to resolve the Ukraine conflict and India reaffirming that dialogue and diplomacy is the only way forward.”
So driving the unassuming white fortuner was not just two of the world’s most powerful men, but a relationship decades in the making which, ready for renewal amid an uncertain world, white washed all enmity and suspicion to keep alive what is always called one of India-Pakistan’s difficult love stories.
