Nick Jonas, an American singer and spouse to Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra Jonas, discloses emotional experiences surrounding the arrival of their daughter, Malti Marie, whom the couple welcomed through a surrogate mother in January 2022. During a recent episode of the Jay Shetty Podcast, Nick Jonas shared that the first few weeks of life for baby Malti were both intense and scary; also stating the severity of Malti’s health issue.
Arrival Earlier Than Expected with a “Purple” Appearance and Premature
Malti was born three months earlier than the original projected released date of April 2022, according to Jonas. While Malti weighed just one pound and eleven ounces (approximately 780 grams), he referred to her as “purple” in color indicating that Malti was immediately in a critical condition when she was delivered.
Immediately Following Birth, Medical Personnel in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Had to Resuscitate Malti. After the resuscitation process, Malti was provided with life-saving treatments, which included being intubated.
Multiple Blood Transfusions and Extended Hospitalization
Malti’s first two weeks of existence consisted of many additional medical procedures. According to Jonas,Malti received six blood transfusions during her hospitalization in the NICU that lasted approximately three and a half months before she could be discharged to go home.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, when their daughter was born, visitation rules at the hospital were very strict. Reportedly, Jonas and Chopra Jonas (the baby’s parents) took 12-hour shifts at the hospital to support one another while caring for their infant daughter, while also being constrained by the pandemic and trying to cope with the stress and emotional impact of this experience.

Family Memories
When recalling this time, Jonas got very emotional while talking about how hard it was for him and his wife. He mentioned how uncertain and long the long hospital hours were, but that Malti and all of the staff who worked at NICU were very resilient, so he felt proud of what each of them was able to accomplish with the baby (Malti), as well as complimenting Priyanka with how strong she was, and calling her a “brilliant woman,” and saying that both her determination and emotional stability motivated him.
A Thriving & Pure Child Today
Malti Marie is now four years old, and Jonas was able to reflect on how lucky he is that she is doing well, and that he is in awe of how she has thrived (after such a tough start to life). Jonas and Priyanka choose to keep Malti private, and they rarely display her photo to the public, but they choose to enjoy and celebrate even the smallest family things or events together (ex. Relaxing “Sunday morning snuggle time”).
