Drinking enough water is critical to maintaining your overall health, but when it comes to drinking water after dinner, timing is everything. Small sips of water are usually fine, but too much liquid consumed immediately after a late meal can impact your ability to digest food, sleep and be comfortable overall.

1. Drinking too much water immediately after eating can weaken digestion

To properly function, your digestive system needs to be able to balance out the acids and the enzymes in your stomach. When you drink a lot of water immediately after eating, it can:

  • Dilute stomach acid;
  • Slow digestion of food;
  • Cause bloating and an overall heavy feeling.

Metabolism decreases as you move into the evening hours. It is said, in traditional systems such as Ayurveda, that digestion is weakest at night. Therefore, consuming too much excess fluid in your stomach after dinner can have a negative effect on your digestive system after dinner.

Safer tip: If you are thirsty post-dinner, take small sips of water instead of drinking a full glass.

2. Drinking a lot of water after your meal can trigger an acid reflux response

When you lay down directly after eating dinner, the chance of developing an acid reflux episode is already increased. If you consumed a large amount of water after finishing dinner, you will increase the volume of your stomach by adding more liquid and pushing your stomach contents up into the esophagus while lying down, which increases your likelihood of suffering from heartburn.

This can be especially painful for individuals living with GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease). The fluids that caused the increase in volume combined with the effects of gravity when lying down can lead to a heightened risk of discomfort while sleeping.

3. It Disrupts Sleep

Drinking too much water close to bedtime can cause you to:

  • Awaken during the night to urinate frequently. (Nocturia)
  • Disrupt the rhythms of your sleeping pattern. (Circadian rhythms)
  • Suffer poor quality of deep sleep.

Sleep is necessary for regulating hormones and metabolism, and recovering from physical activities. Consequently, if you are awakened several times per night to urinate, you may still feel exhausted the next morning after getting plenty of sleep.

Tip: Finish your daily quota of water about an hour to 2 hours before going to bed.

4. You May Experience Bloating and Discomfort From the Large Amount of Water Consumed Late at Night

After a large dinner, your stomach is already full and expanded, and when you add a large volume of water to it you can:

  • Bloat (the pressure in the abdomen increases)
  • Have that “too full/tight” or heavy feeling
  • Create gas (because of the pressure created by the water)

You will notice the discomfort more at night because you are less active than during the daytime. Movement helps stimulate your digestive system, and thus when you are inactive, your digestive system is less efficient, leading to a higher likelihood of discomfort due to the combination of food and water.

5. You Could Indirectly Contribute to Your Weight Problem

Drinking water at night or with a heavy meal has zero calories, but late-night habits can have an impact on your weight. Drinking a lot of water when you eat a lot of food could:

  • Encourage overeating/overconsumption (you may confuse signals to stop eating)
  • Encourage late-night eating/snacking
  • Decrease the efficiency of your digestive system.
  • Individually or together with a couch-potato lifestyle, this can indirectly affect your weight management over time.

How Can I Know If It is Safe to Consume Water at Night?

You do not need to avoid consuming water completely. You should:

  • You ate spicy or salty food
  • You’re dehydrated
  • Moderation is key. If you sip in moderation, you can have a safe drink that doesn’t upset your digestion or your sleep.

Healthier Hydration at Night Tips

  • Drink water 30-45 minutes before dinner.
  • Don’t drink a large quantity of water right after you eat.
  • Wait at least 30 minutes to drink anything again after eating.
  • Don’t drink a large amount of fluids just before bed.

Summary:

Drinking too much water after a late meal can do the following:

  • Delay digestion
  • Cause heartburn
  • Keep you awake
  • Make you feel bloated.
  • Moderate sipping of water is okay. The goal should not be restriction but balanced.

Your body digests most effectively when provided with the proper environment to digest (especially at night while preparing for rest and repair).
