The stillness of the Shivrampur Road in the Satna district was broken early this past Sunday, January 18, 2026 by a harrowing uncovering which sent an upsurge of shock and uproar through its first comers. Along the side of the road, 21 dead monkeys lay lifeless — their corpses displayed chilling signs that have authorities and residents in Corsicana as well as local wildlife officials seeking an explanation.

Although three more monkeys were located alive – struggling to breathe and battling with life – the high death toll has sparked an enquiry; as many believe it a result of deliberate cruelty rather than just a natural disaster.

The Crime Scene: Water, Blood and Confusion

The matter was reported in the region around the Sitapur police outpost of Kotwali Karvi. Witnesses who found the bodies also reported a gruesome scene with the monkey carcasses drenched in water and many of them were bleeding from their mouths. Their surfaces were wet, and although it had not rained in the area recently—or a nearby water source—the fact that they were moist became one of the central points of contention in the mystery.

Local police and forest department officials rushed to the spot after receiving a report, cordoning off the area. As police recovered 21 bodies for post-mortem, the spotlight is now on the three survivors. The injured were taken to a nearby veterinary hospital, who is now treating what seems to be extensive internal trauma.

“The scene was heartbreaking. When you see dozens of animals lined up dead in a row, and others that can barely breathe, to say this was just an accident seems very unlikely,” said the local resident who helped the authorities.

Electrocution vs Foul Play: The Dueling Theories

In the aftermath, there has been a disconnect between early official estimates and what people there are seeing and hearing. Circle Officer Arvind Verma said the initial estimate of the forest department hints at electrocution. This theory proposes that the troop encountered live wire, causing a widespread incident.

But local activists and villagers find this reasoning extremely difficult to swallow, for a number of reasons.

  • No Infrastructure: Residents note that there’re no high tension power lines anywhere near where the bodies were discovered.
  • The “Soaked” Labeled: Being electrocuted will leave burn marks and singed fur, it does not necessarily explain why the dogs were drenched in water or why they had bleeding from their mouths.
  • Localized Pattern: The “hasty disposal” of the bodies along the side of the road implies they may have been killed elsewhere and dumped — a tactic typically employed by killers to disorient investigators in mass poisoning cases.

An Emerging Pattern of Man-Wildlife Conflicts?

The incident does not occur in a vacuum. This is exactly six months from July 2025 when a similar horror was discovered near the Bandipur Tiger Reserve, where 20 monkeys were found crammed into gunny bags. In that case, forensic laboratory tests later proved poisonous substances were used in intentionally poisoning the monkeys by the perpetrators presumably annoyed by “monkey menace” in farming fields.

In the Chitrakoot case, investigators are now attempting to determine whether the troop was poisoned with “anti-social elements” using bait — such as water-soaked grain or fruit, which would explain both the bleeding and wet condition of the carcasses.

The Path to Justice: Forensics & CCTV

Postmortem examination to the carcasses is sent for detail of cause of death. At the same time, police are also examining CCTV footage of toll points and private farm houses in the vicinity to ascertain suspicious movement of vehicles on Saturday night.

A case has been lodged by the Forest Department under the Wildlife Protection Act and senior officers have assured an impartial investigation. For the community, what’s more important is that something so horrific doesn’t go unpunished as a “massacre.” The fate of the three monkeys who had fallen ill might offer the most important clues: If they recover, blood tests could help to identify whatever chemical or poison was used, assuming that poisoning is responsible.

As the sun sets on Chitrakoot’s forest now, the silence is a sobering sound of how thin the line is between human growth and wildlife protection. Whether it was simply a terrible accident or a deliberate crime, the deaths of 21 people there have cast a shadow on the conservation efforts in that part of the world.
