With the introduction of E85 fuel, a high ethanol blend designed for flex-fuel cars, India has taken a significant step toward cleaner, more environmentally friendly transportation. Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri officially presented the new fuel on World Environment Day. This shows that the government wants to reduce its reliance on foreign crude oil and promote cleaner fuels.
India’s broader energy transition plan should be supported by the introduction of E85 fuel, which will also open new possibilities for farms and the ethanol industry. Officials think the plan will improve energy security, reduce pollution, and make it easier for people across the country to buy flex-fuel cars.
What is E85 fuel, and why is it important?
The fuel blend E85 is made up of about 80% to 85% ethanol and the rest is petrol. E85 differs from regular gas because it is designed to work with flex fuel vehicles (FFVs), which can use ethanol blends ranging from E20 to E100.
The start is the next step in India’s effort to mix biofuel with other fuels. As part of attempts to use less fossil fuel, the country has slowly added more ethanol to fuel over the past few years. The arrival of E85 is meant to speed up this change by giving cars that can use it a better option.
Government officials have said that E85 is good for the environment because it reduces harmful emissions and supports ethanol production in the United States. Because ethanol is mostly made from agricultural materials, the move should help rural economies and give farmers more ways to earn income.

E85 will cost less than regular fuel
One of the best things about the new fuel is that it costs less. Regular E20 fuel will cost about ₹20 more per liter than E85 fuel, according to the government.
Regular gasoline costs more than ₹102 per litre in Delhi, where the spread has already begun. E85 costs about ₹82 per litre. The price difference was made to get people and car companies to use flex-fuel technology longer.
Officials said that the lower price is because of the fuel’s makeup and how much energy it has. The government hopes that making E85 cheaper will give people a good reason to think about buying a flex-fuel car.
This move should also help India lower its huge fuel import bill. The country buys a lot of energy from other countries every year, since it is one of the biggest buyers of crude oil in the world. Using more ethanol made in the United States could help lower that demand over time.
Plans call for a phased nationwide rollout
E85 fuel has only been available at a few petrol stations so far, but the government has already laid out a big plan to expand the network.
In the beginning, E85 will only be sold at 48 public petrol stations across the country. The government has said that the network will grow very quickly in the next few months.
The number of E85 stations should rise to around 500 by the end of 2026, according to the plan that was announced at the start. The government also wants there to be about 5,000 stores by the end of 2027.
Major urban areas like Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur are likely to be some of the first places where it becomes easier to get. The increase is meant to make it easier for people who own flex-fuel cars to get the fuel as the use of these vehicles grows.

Flex-fuel cars are the stars of the show
The success of E85 fuel depends largely on how many cars are available that can use it. Flex-fuel vehicles are different from regular fuel powered vehicles because they are made to handle high ethanol amounts safely and efficiently.
Officials from the government have made it clear that E85 should only be used in cars that are especially made to use this type of fuel blend. Existing gas cars and regular cars that can work with E20 are not made to run on E85.
In the Indian market, several car companies have already started putting out flex-fuel types. Toyota, Maruti Suzuki, and Hero MotoCorp are just a few of the companies that have shown off or released cars that can run on higher ethanol blends.
During the introduction, the energy minister said that some of Toyota’s flex-fuel models are some of the best examples of cars that can run on E85. The involvement of the industry is thought to be very important for boosting buyer trust and speeding up acceptance.
Automakers are working closely with officials to try and prove flex-fuel technology in India’s driving conditions before it can be used by more people.
