Mumbai witnessed widespread disruption on Wednesday morning after an intense overnight spell of monsoon rain flooded roads, uprooted trees and affected railway services across the city and nearby areas. Several locations recorded more than 200 mm of rainfall within hours, exposing infrastructure vulnerabilities and creating traffic chaos during peak travel time.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for Mumbai, warning residents of moderate to heavy rainfall along with thunder and lightning as monsoon activity continues across the region.
Extremely Heavy Rain Batters Mumbai
Large parts of Mumbai and its suburbs experienced severe rainfall between Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning. According to the IMD, multiple weather stations recorded extremely heavy rainfall during the period between 8:30 pm Tuesday and 5:30 am Wednesday.
Ram Mandir recorded the highest rainfall at 224 mm. Colaba followed with 218.5 mm, while Santacruz logged 210.6 mm of rain during the same period.
Several other areas also received very heavy rainfall ranging between 115.6 mm and 204.4 mm. These included Sion, Vikhroli, Vidyavihar, Tata Power Chembur, Byculla, Bandra and Juhu Airport.
The southwest monsoon officially arrived in Mumbai on Tuesday, reaching the city 13 days later than its normal onset date. The monsoon’s arrival brought widespread showers across Mumbai and adjoining suburbs, ending the prolonged spell of humid and sweltering weather conditions.

Infrastructure Damage Reported Across City
Heavy rain during the night triggered multiple incidents across Mumbai, including wall collapses, uprooted trees and road flooding.
Wall Collapses Near Residential Building
One of the major incidents was reported from Vikhroli West, where a wall next to a residential building collapsed because of the intense rainfall.
The incident occurred near the Sun City Complex located along the Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road. No further details regarding casualties or injuries were immediately available.
Tree Falls on Car, Driver Injured
In another rain-related incident, a tree collapsed onto a car, crushing the vehicle and injuring the driver who remained seated inside at the time.
Officials said rescue operations were underway and teams were attempting to remove the fallen tree and clear the area.
The incident highlighted the dangers posed by strong winds and waterlogged conditions during heavy monsoon activity in the city.

Railway Services Disrupted After Track Cave-In
The overnight rain also affected suburban train services, particularly on Central Railway’s Trans-Harbour line between Thane and Vashi/Panvel in neighbouring Navi Mumbai.
Officials said excessive water flow between Turbhe and Koparkhairane stations caused a track cave-in, forcing authorities to temporarily suspend operations on affected sections.
A Central Railway spokesperson stated that the up line on the Thane-Vashi route was declared unsafe at 5.06 am. The down line was later declared unsafe at 5.50 am, creating disruptions during the morning rush hour.
Services were gradually restored later in the morning. According to officials, the up line became operational again at 7.27 am with a speed restriction of 10 kmph imposed on trains. The down line was declared safe at 7.35 am, allowing trains to operate at a speed of 30 kmph.
“Track cave-in occurred because of excess water flow,” the official said, as reported by the news agency PTI.
The disruption led to delays and overcrowding at several railway stations during the early hours of Wednesday.
Waterlogging Causes Traffic Problems
Several low-lying areas of Mumbai experienced severe waterlogging after the overnight rainfall. Flooded roads slowed traffic movement and caused inconvenience to commuters across the city.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) later stated that water levels had receded in many of the affected locations and that traffic conditions were gradually returning to normal.
In a post shared on X, formerly Twitter, the civic body released photographs and videos from different parts of the city showing roads after water levels dropped.
The BMC said, “Water logging occurred for some time at Andheri Subway, Hindmata, Dadar and Malad Subway. Water has now receded at these locations. Also, at Gandhi Market, Sion, the water is draining out and traffic is running smoothly. In addition, railway and BEST services are operating normally.”
Areas such as Andheri Subway, Hindmata, Dadar, Malad Subway and Gandhi Market in Sion were among the locations affected by flooding during the night and early morning hours.

BMC Teams Deployed Across Mumbai
The municipal corporation also shared a video from Borivali West showing civic workers unclogging drains and clearing accumulated water to improve traffic flow.
Officials said disaster management teams and civic authorities remained on alert across Mumbai as rainfall activity is expected to continue in the coming days.
Emergency response teams have been monitoring rain-related incidents throughout the city to ensure quick restoration of normal services wherever disruptions are reported.
