Heavy tension unfolded at the Himachal Pradesh-Uttarakhand border on Thursday night after a large group of Nihang Sikhs clashed with police personnel and forced their way through security barricades at the Kulhal checkpoint in Uttarakhand’s Vikasnagar area. The group was heading towards Hemkund Sahib amid growing unrest linked to the arrest of four Nihang members in the Karnprayag violence case.

Authorities had deployed a significant police force at the border after Nihang groups announced plans to march into Uttarakhand from Punjab. Despite extensive barricading and negotiations by officials, a section of protesters breached the security barriers and moved forward.

Massive Police Deployment at Kulhal Border

The Kulhal-Vikasnagar border area witnessed intense security arrangements before the protesters arrived.

Visuals from the location showed the checkpoint transformed into a heavily fortified zone with multiple layers of metal barricades and a large deployment of police personnel wearing riot-control gear.

The Uttarakhand administration had strengthened security in anticipation of the march after Nihang groups publicly declared their intention to enter the state.

Officials said the protesters were travelling from Mohali in Punjab and were attempting to proceed toward Hemkund Sahib.

To prevent any escalation, authorities converted the Kulhal outpost area into a high-security zone with continuous monitoring and crowd-control measures.

Protesters Push Through Barricades

Tensions escalated when police intercepted the group at the border checkpoint.

According to officials, a confrontation broke out between the protesters and security personnel after attempts were made to stop the march.

Several Nihang Sikhs reportedly used physical force to break through the barricades and continue moving toward Uttarakhand.

Witnesses at the scene described dozens of Nihangs dressed in traditional blue attire and carrying swords, rods, and other sharp-edged weapons.

The dramatic standoff created panic in the area as police attempted to contain the crowd and restore order.

Police Trying to Maintain Law and Order

Pankaj Gairola, Superintendent of Police (Rural), confirmed that some protesters had breached the barricades.

Speaking to PTI, he said, “We are trying to maintain the law and order situation under control.”

Authorities continued monitoring the movement of the protesters while additional security personnel remained deployed in the region.

Talks Between Administration and Protesters Failed

Senior district officials reached the border point in an effort to prevent the situation from worsening.

The local SDM, Tahsildar, and police officers held discussions with representatives of the Nihang group, attempting to negotiate a peaceful resolution.

However, officials said the talks did not produce any concrete outcome.

The group refused to retreat and maintained its demand for the release of four Nihang Sikhs arrested in connection with the Karnprayag incident earlier this month.

Protesters stated that they would not return to Punjab until the detained individuals were freed.

Nihang Group Demands Release of Four Members

Representatives of the protesting group said their primary demand was the release of the four Nihang Sikhs arrested after the Karnprayag violence case.

According to the protesters, they intended to continue their religious journey peacefully while reciting prayers.

One representative told reporters at the scene, “We intend to resolve the dispute with locals through a compromise rather than conflict.”

The group also claimed that senior police officials had assured them that bail for the arrested Nihang members would be processed within a few days.

Despite those assurances, the protesters maintained that they would remain in Uttarakhand until the four arrested members were released and allowed to accompany them back to Punjab.

Karnprayag Incident Triggered Current Tensions

The ongoing dispute is linked to a violent incident that took place in Karnprayag on June 16.

According to officials, a minor altercation between local residents and another group of Nihang Sikhs escalated into violence.

Police alleged that the Nihangs brandished swords during the clash, resulting in injuries to several local residents.

Authorities also confirmed that one Nihang Sikh was injured during the confrontation.

Following the incident, police registered a case and arrested four Nihang members.

The arrests later became a major point of contention among sections of the Sikh community.

Sikh Community Alleged “One-Sided” Action

A section of the Sikh community criticised the administration’s handling of the Karnprayag case and accused authorities of taking “one-sided” action.

Community members argued that the arrests unfairly targeted Nihang Sikhs while failing to adequately address the broader circumstances surrounding the clash.

The issue subsequently triggered protests and calls for intervention from Sikh groups.

The march toward Hemkund Sahib appears to have emerged from these growing tensions and demands for the release of the arrested individuals.

Hemkund Sahib Pilgrimage Adds Religious Sensitivity

The situation has gained additional sensitivity because the group was travelling toward Hemkund Sahib, one of the most significant Sikh pilgrimage sites in Uttarakhand.

Authorities have remained cautious while handling the protest to avoid further escalation involving religious sentiments.

Police officials continued maintaining security along the route while closely monitoring the movement of the protesters.

Officials have not yet indicated whether additional restrictions or preventive measures would be imposed in the coming days.

Administration Monitoring Situation Closely

The Uttarakhand administration said efforts were continuing to maintain peace and prevent violence in the region.

Security agencies remained on alert throughout Thursday night as officials monitored developments at the border and nearby areas.

Authorities are also expected to continue discussions with representatives of the protesting group in an attempt to de-escalate tensions peacefully.

At present, officials have not released further details regarding possible legal action connected to the barricade breach.
