For the people of Ladakh and those traveling through the high-altitude desert, the weather transcends a conversation starter: It is life’s ultimate gatekeeper. On Saturday, January 17th 2026, the gatekeeper cold-shouldered as a fresh snowstorm in the Zojila Axis literally bought to halt traffic on Srinagar-Leh National Highway.

What started off with a mild flurry on Friday afternoon, ended up as being heavy snowfall by Saturday morning that buried the Zojila Pass under 6 to 8 inches of fresh snow. In the high-mountain terrain where the road clings to the sides of Himalayan peaks, even inches can render a critical artery into a dangerous slide.

Slippery Slope and Zero Visibility: the fight at 11,500 feet

The Zojila Pass, located at an elevation of about 11,575 ft (3.528 m), is infamously unpredictable. But today’s considerable disruption was not just due to how much snow, or the combination of ice underneath, on icy roads and near-zero visibility.

As the mercury dropped, rain that had fallen quickly turned tarmac to black ice, leaving most of us without specialist equipment unable to move. Accounts from on the ground near Minamarg and Drass, often referred to as the second coldest inhabitable place in the world, spoke of white-out conditions where the road and sky appeared as one.

“The real enemy today was the wind,” said a driver stranded by the weather near Sonamarg._ “The snow is so high and it’s blowing across the pass so fast you can no longer see the tail lights of the truck that’s ten feet ahead of you. By then, you’re not driving; you’re just hoping to hell that you’re still on a road.”

The Snow Warriors of the BRO: An Unending Rescue Operation

Although the conditions are hostile, BRO has already put its heavy machinery in place. Dubbed the “Snow Warriors” of Project Beacon (responsible for the Sonamarg side) and Project Vijayak (the Drass side), their teams are coordinating to remove the build-up.

The BRO has been in particularly prominent play this year. The Zojila Pass, traditionally closes the pass in December or early January for an entire winter. But the organization has taken a historic step in 2026 to keep the pass open until deep into winter. They have helped a historic number of convoys make it through this January, despite Chilla-e-Kalan: the toughest 40 days of Winter in these parts.

The current strategy involves:

Men pushed Snow Plow from Zero Point to Lhotse face.

  • Sanding and Salting: Police on Baltal hairpin bend try to break ice bond.
  • Emergency Facilitation: Even as the road was closed generally, HYO stated that all police teams at Minamarg managed the passage of an emergency ambulance for my Drass that reached a wilfully hospital in Srinagar for treatment today.

Effect on Tourism and Logistics: A Two-Edged Sword

The upheaval has brought a mixed impact to the local economy. Fresh snow in Sonamarg has brought cheers to hundreds of visitors. The postcard pretty “winter wonderland” scenes have inspired an avalanche of visitors, but also created nightmarish traffic jams at the base of the climb.

But for the logistics of Ladakh, it’s a race against time. The Zojila Axis is the only way for the essential supplies such as fuel, medicine and food to reach Kargil and Leh districts. Though the administration has been stockpiling resources for the winter, every day that the road remains closed increases pressure to airlift supplies using expensive sorties by the Indian Air Force.

A traffic advisory has been given to the people. Do not venture on any non-essential travel until the BRO issues the “Go Signal”. If you are given permission to travel, put on anti-skid chains only. Keeping an eye on official sources for the Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumri (SSG) road.

Looking Ahead: More Snow in Sight?

The Meteorological Department (MeT) has warned that the relief could be short-lived. Another fresh Western Disturbance is predicted to hit the region near January 19-20, which may cause moderate as well as heavy snowfall over Kargil and Zanskar’s peaks.

For the moment, the Zojila Axis is a place of grueling work and waiting. Except for the roar of BRO bulldozers and the distant hum of abandoned engines, it’s purring silence: those gunshots from two weeks ago are long gone. As the sun goes down behind the peaks today, hope still exists that this “lifeline” would be revived by tomorrow morning—in case Himalayan weather allows a temporary truce.
