Seven Rajya Sabha MPs, including Raghav Chadha, have quit and plan to join the BJP. This is a big setback for the AAP. According to Chadha, two-thirds of the AAP’s Rajya Sabha members have joined the move. This means that they have followed the constitution’s anti-defection rules and won’t be disqualified.

Seven Rajya Sabha MPs from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), including Raghav Chadha, Sandeep Pathak, and Ashok Mittal, quit the party on Friday. This was a big loss for the party.

Mittal recently took over as Chadha’s replacement as the AAP’s deputy leader in the Upper House of Parliament. Chadha said that two-thirds of the AAP’s Rajya Sabha MPs had chosen to leave the party and join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as a separate group. He also said that Harbhajan Singh and Swati Maliwal, two party MPs, were leaving the AAP.Two-thirds of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MPs in the Rajya Sabha have decided to follow the Constitution of India’s rules and join forces with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Raghav Chadha confirmed this on X, pointing out the constitutional stance.

Why will these 7 RS MPs keep their places even though they left the AAP?

According to Paragraph 4 of the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution, Rajya Sabha members can stay in office even if at least two-thirds of their party’s lawmakers agree to join another political party. This is because of rules against desertion.

According to Chadha, the AAP has 10 Rajya Sabha MPs. Seven of them have left the party, so the two-thirds requirement has been met.

It was signed by four other AAP Rajya Sabha members, and he said it was proof that a different group had been formed and would be merging with the BJP. Sandeep Pathak, Rajinder Gupta, Harbhajan Singh, Vikramjit Singh Sahney, and Swati Maliwal were also named as members of the group. Ashok Mittal, who had just taken over as his deputy leader in the Rajya Sabha, was also named.

The Aam Aadmi Party has 10 members in the Rajya Sabha

They are more than two-thirds behind this project with us. Chadha told PTI, “They have already signed, and this morning we gave all the necessary paperwork to the chairman of the Rajya Sabha. This included signed letters and other official papers.”

What if Raghav Chadha had left AAP by himself?

There is a rule that says Raghav Chadha would lose his Rajya Sabha seat if he left AAP on his own. In general, a lawmaker can lose their job if they quit their party or vote against the party whip.

Which three AAP members of the Rajya Sabha are still in office?

There are three MPs who are still with the AAP. They are Sanjay Singh, Balbir Singh Seechewal, and ND Gupta.

Why couldn’t AAP get rid of him?

The law says that if a party kicks out an MP, that MP does not immediately lose their place in the Rajya Sabha. This meant that even if AAP had kicked him out of the party, he could have stayed in Parliament and spoken out against them. To fight this, the party would have had to show actions against the party, which would have been a long and subjective process chosen by the head of the Rajya Sabha.

After calming things down, Chadha was able to get the help he needed today

Six of the seven Rajya Sabha MPs who quit the AAP are from Punjab, which is a big loss for the party. These MPs were chosen in 2022, when the AAP won a huge majority in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha polls. Because they quit, the party now only has one Rajya Sabha MP from Punjab. He is Balbir Singh Seechewal, who is an ecologist and spiritual leader.

This is a big deal for Punjab’s ruling party, especially since the state Assembly polls are coming up in 10 months. All six of the MPs who are leaving still have terms in the Rajya Sabha that end in April 2028.

Arvind Kejriwal, the national convenor of the AAP, criticised the BJP and said that the party in power at the center had “shoved” the people of Punjab. He went on X and said, “BJP ne fir se Punjabio ke sath kia dhakka” (The BJP has pushed the Punjabis again).

CM of Punjab Bhagwant Mann called the seven MPs who are joining the BJP “traitors.”He also said, “The seven MPs who are joining the BJP don’t represent Punjab; they are traitors.” He added that they would not get any rewards in the BJP either.
