In a speech about delimitation in the Lok Sabha, Amit Shah said that after the Lok Sabha gets bigger, the share of seats in southern states will rise from 23.76% to 23.87%.

Following the increase in the size of the Lok Sabha, the share of seats in southern states will rise from 23.76% to 23.87%, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said Thursday. He was trying to calm the fears of the southern states that they would lose influence. Shah said that the number of Lok Sabha seats in southern states will go from 129 to 195.

In the Lok Sabha, the Union Home Minister also responded to the opposition’s claim that the process in delimitation was being done to help the Bharatiya Janata Party.

I want to make it clear that the Delimitation Commission’s report will not go into action until it is approved by Parliament and the President. This means that it won’t be put into place before 2029. Elections will still be held under the same system and in the same districts until 2029. “So Akhilesh ji (Yadav) doesn’t need to be worried,” Amit Shah said.

“Yes, I mean the year 2027.” “Don’t be scared, even though he (Akhilesh) won’t win,” he said.

It will be 24% more likely for southern states to be represented overall

“A story is being told and misunderstanding is being spread that these three Bills—the Constitutional Amendment Bill and the two related laws on delimitation and changes to election procedures—will make it harder for southern states to be represented in the Lok Sabha and cost them a lot of seats.” That Bill that was in front of the House is now theirs. “I’d like to clear up a few things based on how it works in real life,” Shah said.

Shah said that of the 543 seats in the Lok Sabha that are currently in use, only 28 are in Karnataka. This is 2.1% of the total number of seats. Karnataka will have 42 seats instead of 28, after this bill and the Constitutional Amendment are passed.

This group’s share of the 816-member House will be about 5.14%

That means Karnataka won’t really lose anything. During his speech, Shah talked about Andhra Pradesh. He said that the state has 25 seats in the Lok Sabha, which is 4.60% of the total. “Its share will go from 4.60% to about 4.65%, and its seats will go up from 36 to 38.”

It has 17 seats, which is 3.13 percent of the 543 places in the House that are currently filled. With a growth of about 50%, there will be 26 seats, and its share will rise to 3.18 %. As for Tamil Nadu, where a lot of people have been worried and a lot of them have come dressed in black, I want to reassure the people of the state that their share will not go down, it will go up.

There are 39 seats in Tamil Nadu now, and there will be 59 seats by 2022

This is a rise of 7.18 percent to 7.23 percent. He said that the number of seats in Kerala would go from 20 to 30.

Shah also said that the amount of southern states’ votes will rise from 23.76 percent to 24 percent, despite the “story” that the opposition tried to build.

Some party figures said that the numbers Shah was giving them were not in the Bill

In response, Shah said, “As a minister who is piloting this Bill, as the Home Minister of the country I am giving all these details.”

The home minister said that the number of 850 seats has also been called into question. “The number 850 comes from considering the following: if there are 100 seats and 33% of them should be set aside for women, then adding 50% more seats would make it 150.”

Since the Delimitation Commission Act has not been changed, Amit Shah also made it clear that there is no need to worry about any kind of manipulation, as Priyanka Gandhi, a member of the Lok Sabha, said there was.

Dear Member Priyanka-ji, I want to let you know that we have not made any changes to the Delimitation Commission Act. We have kept the whole Delimitation Commission Act the same, not even a comma or full stop has been changed. If you say that manipulation happened before and now you say it could happen again, I can only say this: If the Act was abused in the past, we will not use it that way again.

Amit Shah also said that along with the planned population count, a race census would be held.

The Opposition said that allowing women to vote would hurt democracy in the long run. In response, Shah said, “No one has the power to end democracy in the country.” People turned down those who tried to take power during the Emergency; democracy was not hurt.
