MrBeast, or Jimmy Donaldson, has made history as the first individual creator to join a YouTube channel that surpasses 500 million subscribers!
The internet titan reached a jaw-dropping half-a-billion milestone on a live broadcast where everyone publicly cheered the milestone, and was personally celebrated by YouTube’s CEO, Neal Mohan, who presented the milestone with a special, one-of-a-kind custom Play Button.
From a Subdued Stream to a Historic Peak
Naturally, as with anything else on the internet, the path to 500 million subscribers wasn’t marked by a wild stunt and a taped crowd of a few million dollars. Rather, Donaldson opted for a relatively sedate, sentimentally themed live broadcast, giving his response to some of his most cherished videos, some of his earliest, low cost production efforts, with over 600,000 concurrent viewers watching him.
In the running joke of the moment, his followers got together for a collective “un-subscription” campaign as his countdown neared the tipping point, only for it to last far too long before being flooded by a surge of re-subscriptions.
When the last pieces of confetti had settled, Donaldson was clearly visibly affected by his audience’s gaze and uttered his message to them with unusual openness:
“I don’t want to have half a billion subscribers; I guess, on a statistical level, I shouldn’t. I grew up in a poor family, as my family went bankrupt during the financial crisis, Donaldson said. “When I started this channel at 13, I didn’t have the money to buy equipment, I had to save up money from my AdSense just to buy a microphone or computer, I really shouldn’t be where I am now.”
YouTube’s CEO, Neal Mohan, Responds
Donaldson was soon recognized as a major success by the top brass of the platform. YouTube CEO Neal Mohan posted a message to social media to honor the historic milestone, giving the creator a brand new trophy to commemorate the milestone of a half billion subscribers.
“Congratulations MrBeast on making history as the first creator to reach 500 million subscribers on YouTube,” Mohan shared. “This is what can happen when one creator is able to pursue their creativity and be themselves. Jimmy, you are a great innovator and we’re so proud of you on this journey.”

The Metrics Behind the Madness
It seems like the corporate entities such as T-Series from India, which specializes in music, and Cocomelon for kids have gone to the stars, but MrBeast is in a league of his own in the creator-led individual sphere. The distance he has to his nearest peer-group rivals shows his absolute supremacy over the modern entertainment scene.
| Creator Brand | Core Content Style | Approximate Subscriber Base |
|---|---|---|
| MrBeast | High-budget challenges, charity, reality | 500 Million |
| Vlad and Niki | Scripted children’s entertainment | ~140 Million |
| Like Nastya | Family vlogs, kids’ content | ~130 Million |
| Kids Diana Show | Children’s lifestyle & play | ~130 Million |
| PewDiePie | Gaming, commentary, internet culture | ~110 Million |
In demographical reports, Donaldson’s control of the next generation of viewers is seen as being the tightest, as he has an estimated 40 per cent of his total viewing base between the ages of 13 and 17 and another 20 per cent between the ages of 18 and 24.
The Philosophy of “Negative Money”
Donaldson’s rise to the top of the internet has changed the way that a media empire is operated. Unlike the traditional media executives who prioritize profit margins, MrBeast is an entrepreneur who is always on a high-risk, zero-margin loop – nearly every dollar he makes is spent on production. Even though Beast Industries is worth billions of dollars and is receiving a massive $100 million production deal with Amazon Prime Video for Beast Games, Donaldson frequently jokes that he has “negative money” in his immediate bank accounts.
His staff estimates that they will spend about $250 million on content production this year. From a financial perspective, it’s the same approach: the more you can scale the more you can scale the impact, the less you care about short-term gains, and the more interesting your story is, the better.

Looking to the Next 20 Years
Rather than calling the half-billion dollar milestone a retirement point, Donaldson tease’d a celebratory special very soon, and stated that his most creative work is yet to come. He charted an analytical course for the channel, with an explicit interest in developing his work into more sophisticated, beautifully shot film-like stories.
That’s where a lot of people would become complacent, and then get lazy, but I’m that much more motivated than ever, Donaldson concluded. I don’t know how much more I can do on YouTube videos. I think my best work is still to come, and I feel like I have 20-30 years left in the tank of making more and more of them.
