The Sairang New Delhi Rajdhani Express hit a group of elephants in the Hojai district of Assam in the early morning hours of Saturday, and at least seven of them were killed and another was severely wounded. This crash also caused a derailment of five coaches and the engine of the train, although the railway authorities said that no passengers were hurt.

Hitting elephants in hojai district

At 2:17 a.m, the accident took place in the Changjurai village, near JamunamukhKampur, a woodland area of central Assam, about 126 km North of Guwahati. In the first reports, it was indicated that all eight elephants in the incident were dead, but this was later verified, and one of them survived, and it is undergoing treatment.

Dense Fog May Have Reduced Visibility

The forest officials suggested that dense fog in the region might have contributed greatly to the accident. The visibility was very low at the time, according to the officials, and the chance that the train crew would not see the herd on the tracks in time was high.

The first responders, local forest officials, and veterinary experts arrived at the location in the early morning to initiate rescue and examination operations. The postmortem works are being undertaken, and cremation will be performed close to the accident scene. The officials reported that all legal and environmental procedures are observed.

Train Driver Applied Emergency Brakes

According to Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), the crash did not happen in one of the elephant corridors, and the driver used emergency brakes after seeing the animals. The effect was nevertheless inevitable.

Passenger coaches still on the line were brought back into the running section of the train, and the train went on to Guwahati a little before 6 a.m. More coaches are to be attached there before the train continues its journey.

Major Disruption to Train Services

The derailment brought a lot of disruption to the Lumding-Guwahati stretches of the railroad. A minimum of nine trains have been cancelled, 13 regulated, and two terminated short as railroad officials strive to restore traffic.

Hours later, restoration teams, heavy equipment, and relief staff were sent to the scene. The top officials in the railways, the general manager and the divisional managers, also came to the scene to organize the recovery efforts.

There are also helpline numbers enabled at Guwahati Railway Station to provide assistance and travel updates. The authorities reported that recovery of track conditions is their first priority, and services are likely to be regulated as time goes by.

Rising Railway–Elephant Collisions a Growing Concern

The accident has heightened fears of increasing cases of railway-elephant collisions in the northeastern part of India. The state of Assam has been among the most badly hit states, and the growing rail systems have been digging through major wildlife areas. Environmentalists claim such accidents highlight the urgency of reconsidering the speed limit for trains in forested areas and reinforcing the early warning system.

According to government statistics, over 180 elephants have been killed by trains throughout India over the past ten years. Wildlife scientists caution that the loss of habitat due to its fragmentation and loss of forest cover and disrupted migration pathways are forcing the herds of elephants into war-torn areas.

The tragedy of Saturday, which is one of the worst tragedies of recent years related to elephants, is likely to boost the demands to increase the wildlife crossings and to add more effective monitoring technologies and redesign the infrastructure in the areas where these animals have been frequent.

Passengers Safe, Rail Safety Review Expected

Although the derailment was so huge, the authorities restated that no patients had been injured. Victims were assisted by giving them temporary accommodation, and their travel plans have not yet been finalized.

An in-depth inquiry into the cause of the derailment has also commenced, and an extensive safety audit on the areas’ train lines is anticipated. Forest officers added that patterns of local herd movement will also be evaluated to determine whether new mitigation measures are needed.

With the ongoing restoration work, the incident has caught the eye of the whole nation, which strengthens the fine balance between building up transport infrastructure and protecting endangered wildlife.
