Another week of mass flight cancellations by IndiGo has meant thousands of passengers in major metro cities have to scramble to find alternative means of travel, and the Indian Railways of India seems the unlikely winner. As airlines grapple with pilot crunches and operational turbulence, trains have become the main backup method, and this has raised new inquiries on whether the ongoing disruption in the aviation industry has paved the way for the next transport revolution that may see a shift of transport back to rail.

The rail bookings that have gone up abruptly, the trains full on the premium routes, and the waiting lists have led analysts to question: Is this just a one-time response, or the beginning of the turnaround of the railway system in India?

Aviation Woes Send Flyers to Railway Platforms

In recent days, news of the massive cancellations announced by IndiGo, due to rostering issues and exhaustion-related restrictions, has caused significant congestion at airports. The picture-sharing travellers displayed the long lines, unresponsive customer counters, and increasing ticket prices at the flights they had left.

Having few same-day air services, mass migration to trains by passengers has occurred on high-demand routes, e.g.:

  • Delhi–Mumbai
  • Delhi–Bengaluru
  • Hyderabad–Chennai
  • Pune–Delhi

The ticketing platforms were recording a significant increase in the number of same-day bookings and next-day bookings, even in slower services, which is indicative of a general change in thinking among passengers who prioritize reliability above convenience.

Indian Railways bookings have increased tremendously, particularly in high-quality services such as Vande Bharat, Rajdhani, and Duronto trains, according to the preliminary estimates by travel agents. The supply of Tatkal became constrained within hours in the metro corridors, and waiting lists increased at a quicker pace than normal in weekday travel.

Privately, railway authorities admit an increase, but no official statistics are still published. One of the senior railway officials stated that passenger footfall has risen in various areas, and higher-speed premium tracks are recording unprecedented demand.

A Passenger Shift — But Will It Last?

According to analysts, the shift is rational given the immediate disruption in the aviation sector, but the greater concern is that any aspect of such a shift would persist once the airline companies’ functions stabilise.

In the past, there were brief periods of transport substitution in India: during the weather disruptions, closures of the airspace, or spikes in prices, the demand in railway transport rose swiftly, and the demand in aviation transport fell. However, long-run changes in passengers are not common unless a long-term increase in train speeds and punctuality, and services back them.

Two particular differences this time, however, are observed by industry watchers:

1. Indian Railways is now offering faster premium trains

Vande Bharat networks have also increased with the reduction of travel times considerably on metro-metro routes, which makes trains more competitive.

2. The cost gap between air and rail has widened

Airfares were skyrocketing into cancellations, and the premium train fares did not keep up. This price gap would temporarily drive additional upper-middle-end customers to rail.

Railways: A Turnaround Point or a Temporary Spike?

Indian Railways has been trying for a long time to undertake an image makeover and frame itself as a modern, safe, and semi-high-speed substitute to short-haul flying. The latest capex in signalling, electrification, and modernisation of stations has contributed greatly to infrastructure capacity.

However, analysts warn that to achieve a real change in mode, there needs to be a regular cycle of high-speed rollouts, system performance punctuality, and better confidence among the masses.

Unpredictable and time-consuming services will not be replaced by rail in favor of air services, except in tactical ways, one transport analyst added.

Aviation Sector Faces Trust Deficit

In the meantime, turbulence in IndiGo’s operations has created doubt among regular passengers. If cancellations persist or workforce deficiencies caused by fatigue continue to strike airlines, passengers are likely to prioritize reliability over speed, a factor that, in the past, favored trains over aviation in India, before the aviation boom.

Other travel industry insiders believe that staffing issues in airlines, expensive tickets, and infrastructure congestion may prompt more customer-comparative travel reviews.

If rail continues to offer faster services, predictable schedules, and price stability, the disruptions in aviation could become an opportunity for the national transporter to position itself as a serious alternative for domestic long-distance travel.

But for now, the sudden rush to trains reflects a familiar reality when airlines stumble, India falls back on rail.
