Bangladesh Refuse To Travel To India For 2026 T20 World Cup-Bangladesh has officially declined to take its national team to India to play in the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup because it has serious concerns about the safety and security of its players and contingent. It is a decision made almost a month before the tournament, which puts the timing and organisation of the event in jeopardy.
BCB Refuses Travel, Wants Change of Venue
Bangladesh were to host three of their group matches in Kolkata, and their first match, against the West Indies, on February 7 at Eden Gardens and another one in Mumbai. Nevertheless, after several deliberations and consultations with the government of Bangladesh, the BCB stated that it was not planning to take its team to Bangladesh under the present conditions.
The board, in its official declaration, restated the importance of players, coaching staff, officials, journalists, and fans. It has formally addressed the International Cricket Council (ICC), asking it to move all of Bangladesh’s matches out of India, ideally to Sri Lanka, the co-host of the tournament.
Bigger Diplomatic Row is the result of the Mustafizur Rahman Episode
The controversy that seems to have led to the stiff stance is the one which involved star pacer Mustafizur Rahman. Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly asked Kolkata Knight Riders to drop Mustafizur in their IPL 2026 squad, on unexplained grounds of external concerns, which the Bangladeshis interpret as politically fuelled and connected with the escalating diplomatic tensions.
The relocation caused intense opposition in Bangladesh, with the ruling termed as discriminatory and signalling a greater hostility by a number of politicians and the media. The sports adviser of Bangladesh, Asif Nazrul, publicly welcomed the BCB’s refusal to travel, saying that the team will not be safe in India in such a situation.
BCB: When One Player is not safe, how is a team safe?
The BCB conducted two emergency board sessions at the top level within 24 hours to analyse the situation. Each time, 17 votes out of a total of 53 directors resulted in a unanimous vote not to write to ICC and decline travel.
According to a senior BCB official, this was not a problem of one cricketer.
India claimed that it could not offer security to a single player; thus, how will it offer security to the entire team? The official was forced to take into account not only players and staff but fans and journalists.
The BCB stressed that it would be willing to play in Sri Lanka, an opinion that is in line with the previous findings by Bangladesh leaders.
BCCI Says Not; ICC Endures Mammoth Logistical Challenge
Interestingly, the BCCI has not come out clearly that the release of Mustafizur was a result of security issues. The BCB has addressed a letter to BCCI requesting it to explain why Mustafizur has been dropped, yet the Indian board had previously demanded that it auction Mustafizur. Nonetheless, this letter is said to lack allegations of a security nature – those issues have been provided directly to ICC.
This has become a titanic task for the ICC. Instead of being prepared as a hybrid hosting event, such as the 2025 Champions Trophy, the 2026 World Cup is organised. Any venue delay would demand tremendous changes in the process of scheduling, logistics, travel arrangements, broadcast systems and stadium assignments.
Should ICC decline to relocate, the withdrawal of Bangladesh may cause a massive tarnishing of the credibility and balance of the tournament.
Cloud of Uncertainty in the Tournament
This is a precedent that introduces complexity to a tournament that has already been influenced by politics. Bangladesh is still a competitive T20 team and a fan-attracting team. This will impact the ticketing, tourism, and revenues of the city, and the number of viewers of the tournaments because of their absence or relocation.
It is yet to be seen whether the cricket diplomacy can be solved or the World Cup will continue under uncertainty. As it currently stands, the refusal of Bangladesh is one of the most important sports-political scandals in recent history, and the future actions of the ICC are in the spotlight of the whole world.
