After a three-month stretch of an unnerving dry spell, winter has arrived in Himachal Pradesh. Not little by little, as is normal, but with an extreme state-wide force that has painted the region in a resplendent yet perilous white. Since late January 22, a strong Western Disturbance has covered the “Land of Gods” with thick white snow that provides respite to agriculture but nightmare on roads.

Though the picture of snow-clad pines in Shimla and Manali may have lured thousands of merry-makers, for people living in Himachal Pradesh it has been too harsh. More than 560 roads have been cut off today and thousands of homes have been left without power as the mercury dropped to ‘once in a generation’ lows, closing Perth in an icy blanket of unseasonably cold weather.

A State Divided: Blocked Roads and Isolated Towns

The high-altitude tribal districts have virtually been cut off from the rest of the world due to heavy snowfall. Lahaul and Spiti district has recorded the maximum number of blockades, with nearly 290 blocked roads as of now,” a statement released by State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) said. The Leh-Manali National Highway (NH-03) and the Kaza-Gramphu road (NH-505) are among several arterial roads that is covered under 4 to 5 feet of snow, blocking vehicular traffic to sustain lives of people living in farther flung areas.

Shimla, the state capital, is no better off. Popular roads including the Dhalli-Kufri road have become “skating rinks” and traffic jams have grounded movement of vehicles due to hundreds of drivers trying to get their wheels on black ice. Upper Shimla, meanwhile, continued to remain largely cut off with the national highway which connected the city to Mandi and Kangra closed till near Heeranagar. Following which the bus service from ISBT Shimla stands cancelled, leading to hundreds of passengers stranded there.

The Public Works Department (PWD) has stepped up a mega restoration task using more than 260 heavy machines – such as JCBs, dozers and specialised ‘snow-cutters’ – to remove debris for resuming traffic. But even as intermittent flakes fall in the upper reaches of Chamba and Kinnaur, it is a slow uphill battle against nature.

The Dark Freeze: No Power and Freezing Weather

Nor are the roads the only things that have buckled under the grip of winter. The state’s power grid has suffered a huge blows as this devastating earthquake has rendered close to 4,800 distribution transformers (DTRs) non-operational. Snow-heavy trees and gusty winds have broken apart high-tension lines, leaving vast areas of Solan, Mandi and Kullu without electricity.

These outages couldn’t have come at a worse time, as temperatures plunged far below freezing. While in the tribal village of Tabo, mercury dropped to -8.7°C and popular tourist destinations Manali and Shimla are recording temperatures around -0.5°C.Following power breakdown absence of electric heaters at homes have made it impossible for people sleep without firewood stoves.

The admin has declared “Yellow Alert” weather advisory for dense fog and cold wave in force! Even as water supply continues for now, officials warned that frozen pipes could soon become a broad problem if sub-zero temperatures continue for long.

The Paradox of the Visitor: Happiness in the Midst of Madness

It has been strange however, that whereas the snow has stagnated the local economy, it has also drawn more people to it from the plains. Thousands of tourists from Chandigarh, Delhi and Punjab have flocked to Manali and the 15-kilometer-long traffic jam stretched backwards from 15 Mile to the main town.

A huge number of visitors remained undeterred: walking the last few kilometers, having abandoned their cars due to gridlock, and enjoying one more major snowfall in 2026. A festive atmosphere prevailed on Manali’s Mall Road, with tourists dancing and clicking pictures — a far cry from the frustrated local taxi drivers and residents struggling to deal with fuel shortages and slippery slopes.

However, authorities have urged caution. “The roads are very much deceptive,” said one spokesman of the district administration. “We have tourists trying to drive conventional sedans up steep, icy inclines and this only adds to the traffic problems and it’s risking lives.”

Agriculture: A Bright Spot in the Snow

Commuting aside, the snow has been welcomed with a “cautious optimism” by farmers and apple orchardists in the state. A long-running drought, which started in late 2025, was threatening the region’s renowned fruit-growing industry. Apple trees need a certain amount of “chilling period” in order to bloom and fruit well for the spring.

This heavy snowfall in late January is massaged by experts who say the snow provides the soil with necessary moisture and temperature modulation. To be sure, the snow’s weight has wreaked havoc on some saplings that are young and still growing, but for many of those who have been suffering the impact of a rather dull winter season, this “white gold” is just what the doctor ordered.

The Week Ahead: More Snow in the Forecast

The relief for Himachal Pradesh could however be short lived. IMD, India’s Met agency, has forecast some relief for January 25 in the form of clearer skies before Western Disturbance hits the region again on Jan 26. This second wave of the snow was likely to uproot trees and block fresh links. The already-buried districts Chamba, Kullu and Kinnaur are expected to receive moderate to heavy snowfall during this phase.

Himachal residents face a test of endurance in the coming days. Much of the state remains both a snow-flocked dream and a treacherous winter wasteland, despite restoration crews working through the night to restore power and open roadways.
