SILENCE: Chandigarh, MiRacle hackers were accustomed to working without making noise, the thunderous bellowing of nine Hawk Mk-132 planes fell upon the iconic Sukhna Lake. When the Indian Air Force (IAF) premier aerobatic group, the Suryakiran Aerobatic Team (SKAT) took flight, thousands of fans with heads craned back and phones in high hands, watched a masterpiece in air predicate.
The show of raw strength and precision of a scalpel-sharp point was the work of the “Ambassadors of the Indian Air Force who had taken the blue sky and turned it into a canvas of national pride. With the coordinated smoke trails of the Tricolour colour to the gravity defying action it was a reminder of skill and spirit that make India air warriors.
Accuracy: 500 Knots- The Art of Formation Flying
The formation of nine aircraft that make up the Suryakiran team is a global rarity; the only team that has this type of formation in the Asian continent. The pilots flew faster than 700 km/h and were separated by a distance of less than five meters in the wingtip to wingtip distance, which is so much a sign of trust and coordination that the supernatural world becomes an issue.
The Signature Maneuvers
The 2026 Chandigarh show had a blend of usual favorites, as well as high octane new stuff:
- The Diamond Formation: An impeccable geometric formation that demonstrated the capacity of the team to work as a one unit, that had silver wings.
- The DNA Maneuver: Two planes taking a loop around the center of the plane forming a double helix together with smoke- a challenge of ultimate pilot concentration.
- The Heart and Arrow: A crowd favorite two jets draw heart in the sky only to have a third fly over and stab it into the heart.
The Barrel Roll and the Inverted Flight: The maneuvers that challenged the pilots physically when they were flying upside down only a few hundred feet above the water.
The smoke-trails, which were tricoloured; work of the local smoke- pod technology being done at the Base Repair Depot at Nashik, filled the sky with saffron, white and green and the crowd down below felt nationalistic.

The Human Relationship: A Welcome Home in the Clouds
In addition to technical genius, there was a personal touch of the present day show to the Tricity (Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula). Some of the members of the 2026 team make this place their home and this gives an extra feel of intimacy to the roaring jets.
The head of the team consisting of wing commander Tejeshwar Singh, a local alumnus of Army Public School, Chandimandir, termed the occasion as full circle. Through an air show at the same lake during his school boy days, Singh is the one who is now the inspiration of the next generation.
On the same note, Flight lieutenant Kanwal Sandhu, who was the commentator of the team and a native of Panchkula, was the liaison between pilots and the people. Her narration made the technicalities of the flight real, the G-forces and the split-second decisions that are going on in the cockpits above.
Sukhna Lake Logistics Masterclass
A large scale such an event needs more than competent pilots. The Chandigarh Administration and IAF collaborated in ensuring that the 10,000 pass-holders in the venue were safe.
- Environmental Safety: To avoid cases of bird hits, which is one of the greatest risks to the low-flying jet, the population was highly informed not to carry eatables since the food scraps draw birds.
- Connection: The Chandigarh Transport Undertaking (CTU) offered free shuttle buses to ensure that spectators travel on seven different points in the city thus keeping the spectators off the road to the congested lake.
- Safety Net: The lake waters had Boats of the Speedboats and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) that were on standby during the display that lasted 60 minutes.
The Sadaiva Sarvottama Soul
The slogan of the Suryakiran team, Sadaiva Sarvottam! (Always the Best) was fully in each of the dives and the rolls. When the show ended with a fast-paced “Bomb Burst,” when the 9 planes take off in varying directions like a flower, the cheers at the Sukhna Lake shores were hard to hear.
To the students of Sainik Schools and the local colleges who were present, the show was not so much about entertainment, but a strong recruitment drive. The performance of the “Metal Birds” so closely would be an excellent reminder of the career opportunities and the prestige that comes with the Indian Air Force.
