People in Kau Kheda village in Rajasthan’s Bharatpur district went crazy when crude oil started leaking from a farmer’s field out of the blue. The strange event was first noticed when a dark, sticky liquid started oozing from the ground.

The heavy oil leak is said to have started on February 23 and has been going on for almost 72 hours. For the third day in a row, oil is still coming out of the ground. Workers for the company have dug a pit and are moving the crude oil into ships using temporary setups. It is said that more than 50 trucks have been taken away from the spot so far. The leak is being controlled by people from the company.

Discovery Sets Off An Alarm Right Away

The company was told about it, and then a group of experts arrived to help. A 100-meter-long ditch has been dug near the leak to direct the oil into a pit, where vacuum trucks are picking it up.

The exact source of the leak has not been found yet. As a safety step, the company has briefly stopped making oil and stopped the flow from pipes nearby.

The farmer who was hurt said that his field had been badly damaged, with crops being killed and the ground becoming slippery. He has asked for money to make up for his loses. People in the village also said that nearby tubewells were releasing explosive gases and oil that was mixed with groundwater. They also said that the constant blasting in the area to keep the pressure up had caused cracks in homes, which made people afraid.

Regional leaders respond quickly

The impacted area was blocked off by teams from the local government and the revenue department while they waited for geology experts to do a full check.

The upsetting discovery prompted the state’s disaster management team to review its emergency plans, especially in rural areas that lack robust infrastructure for responding to natural disasters.

Experts were called in to do an evaluation

Senior officials said that geologists and environmental scientists have been called in to determine where the seepage is coming from and what is happening there. After a first look, the fluid appears to be crude oil, but lab tests are needed to confirm.

Also, experts will test the water and dirt to see if there are any dangerous chemicals or pollution. If it turns out to be crude oil, the event could indicate oil reserves deep underground, which doesn’t happen very often in this part of Rajasthan.

Hydrologists are very worried about what will happen to groundwater quality if oil enters underground aquifers. Seepage that persists for a long time could render wells useless and affect drainage, causing long term problems for farming families.

The government also planned to take core samples from the ground to learn more about the geography and pressure below the surface that could have caused the oil to rise to the surface.

People in the village are worried about the health and environmental risks

People in Kau Kheda town are very afraid about the health risks that might be there. Many of them have animals and let them drink from nearby water sources. Families are afraid that their children won’t be able to play outside or drink water from natural sources because the land and water could become dirty.

As a safety measure, some villages have already started buying water from nearby towns. This puts extra financial pressure on families whose main source of income is farming.

The authorities want peace and clarity

Officials in the district have told the locals to stay cool and said that they are doing everything they can to look into the problem. An alert has been sent out for any coughs, skin irritations, or breathing problems that might happen because of being exposed to unknown chemicals.

The government has said that more details will be shared once scientists finish their tests and studies. They stressed that people shouldn’t jump to conclusions before samples are checked.

Possible Significance in Geology

If it turns out to be crude oil, this would be one of the few times that oil has been found on the top of the earth in a place that isn’t normally oil-rich. The seepage is a rare natural event because Rajasthan is not usually thought of as a petroleum belt.

Geologists will look at the data to see if biological materials from long ago changed into hydrocarbons deep in the earth and if natural pressure or cracks caused the oil to rise.
