First Bilateral Visit in Years Signals Renewed Engagement

This visit by PM Modi follows a long duration of high-level bilateral interactions between India and Ethiopia. According to the officials, the trip is a demonstration of the renewed interest of New Delhi in Africa as an important partner of the Global South. Ethiopia is one of the most rapidly developing African economies, and a key player in the region, which is considered the core of the India Africa strategy.

Upon arrival at Addis Ababa, the Prime Minister was attended to with ceremonial honours, and later in the day, he was to have conferences with the Ethiopian leadership.

Wide-Ranging Talks on Trade, Defence and Development

In the visit, PM Modi will have delegation-level discussions with the Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed with an aim to extend cooperation in the spheres of trade, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, infrastructure, and defence production. India has been a development partner for a long time in Ethiopia and has been contributing to capacity-building projects, healthcare development programmes, and skill development.

Officials added that cooperation on the renewable energy, digital infrastructure, and education areas will be discussed as well, where India has become a global leader in providing solutions at low cost.

India’s Development Partnership in Focus

In Ethiopia, India has, over the years, given lines of credit, grants, and technical aid to assist in projects in sugar production, power transmission, and industrial development. They are likely to sign new agreements during the visit to continue developing cooperation.

There is also the likelihood that PM Modi will meet with institutions that are supported by the Indian side and inspect current projects, as it will emphasize that India is committed to inclusive and sustainable development in Africa.

Engagement With Indian Community and African Union

During his trip, the Prime Minister will engage the Indian diaspora in Ethiopia, where their contribution towards enhancing bilateral relationships will be recognized. There is an emerging Indian community in Ethiopia that deals with trade, manufacturing, and services.

PM Modi will also meet with the representatives of the African Union, which has its headquarters in Addis Ababa. India has always promoted greater collaboration with the AU and has been encouraging the increasing presence of Africa in the world rule platforms.

Strategic Significance of the Visit

The visit coincides with the changing global forces whereby India has been seen to be a spokesperson of the Global South. Deepening the relationship with Ethiopia would be in line with the overall diplomatic efforts made by the Indian government towards Africa, which has seen increased political involvement, economic relations, and multilateral relations and activities.

According to observers, the visit of PM Modi to Ethiopia highlights the fact that India is willing to leave the past of having partnerships with other countries and forge long-term strategic ties, which are based on mutual development and common priorities.
