India’s Congress leader Rahul Gandhi criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for how the government responded to the attack on the Iranian warship IRIS Dena with a torpedo. This caused a political debate. Gandhi said that the government was hurting India’s strategic autonomy and asked why the Prime Minister was not speaking out about the event that happened in seas near India’s strategic neighborhood.

The comments have sparked more political debate about India’s foreign policy and the government’s answer to rising global issues in the area.

The torpedo attack causes worry in the region

The Indian Ocean is still an important vital area for India as it is a path for trade, security and energy supplies.

Strong Criticism from Rahul Gandhi

Rahul Gandhi strongly reacted to what happened and said bad things about how the central government handled it. He said that India’s foreign policy seemed weaker and that Prime Minister Narendra Modi wasn’t doing enough to protect the country’s strategic freedom.

He said that keeping quiet during these kinds of events could send the wrong message to other countries and hurt India’s reputation as a strong, independent player in the world.

When he said those things in public, they quickly became the subject of political discussion, with both fans and opponents joining in.

The Question of Strategic Autonomy

India’s foreign policy has been based on the idea of strategic autonomy for a long time. It means that the country can make decisions about foreign issues on its own, without being pushed by big world forces.

Rahul Gandhi said that India might be moving away from this idea based on how the government responded to the attack on the Iranian ship. He said that areas close to India need strong and independent leadership when global wars start to touch them.

The comment has prompted political leaders and experts to discuss how India should balance its international ties with its need to remain independent in global battles.

Worries about energy and safety in general

If the water gets more stressed, these routes might not work as well. So, politicians and security experts pay close attention to things that happen in the area that involve war or attacks on ships.

Rahul Gandhi raised these concerns and said that to protect national interests, there needs to be aggressive negotiation and clear communication during international emergencies.

Responses from the government and politicians

The opposition has been very critical, but the government has mostly been very careful about the situation. Officials have made it clear that India wants peace, security, and diplomatic solutions to disputes in the area.

People across the country still hold different political views. An attack was made on the Iranian warship about 40 nautical miles off the coast of Sri Lanka. 87 Iranian sailors were killed in the attack, but 32 others were saved by the Sri Lankan military. IRIS Dena was leaving Indian seas after taking part in the International Fleet Review 2026 (IFR) and MILAN 2026 in Visakhapatnam. Former Indian Foreign Secretary Kanwal Sibal said that these practice ships usually can’t carry any weapons because that’s against the rules, so they couldn’t defend themselves. The US was also asked to the practice, but at the last minute, it decided not to go. The IRIS Dena was “a guest of India’s Navy,” and the US hasn’t cared about India’s feelings.
