The well known Amma Canteens in Tamil Nadu are back in the news after Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay ordered a big overhaul of the state’s free food program. The choice comes at a time when many people, especially low income families and those who earn daily wages, still depend on these canteens for cheap meals.

When it began in 2013 under former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa, the Amma Canteen plan fastly became one of the most well known charity programs in Tamil Nadu. People knew the canteens were trustworthy because they served food at unbelievably low prices and helped thousands of people deal with rising living costs. For just 1 Rs for a plate of idlis 3 Rs for sambar rice, and 5 Rs for a plate of idlis, the plan saved the lives of many poor families and city workers.

The Vijay government has chosen to fix up the canteens across Tamil Nadu after people complained that the food quality was getting worse, they weren’t well cared for, and there weren’t many menu options.

Why did the government choose to do something

Several news stories in the past few months have reported on issues that Amma Canteens are facing. As the price of LPG cylinders rose, it put pressure on businesses, and some had to cut the amount of food they served or even halve servings. Workers at some centers said it was hard to cook due to a lack of fuel and financial problems.

Even with these problems, there was more desire for Amma Canteens. As the cost of food at local restaurants and shops rose, more people turned to these free kitchens for cheap meals. People say food ran out before lunchtime in some parts of Chennai due to the growing crowd.

People complained to the government about the cleanliness, taste and state of the kitchen equipment. Because of these concerns, Chief Minister Vijay held review meetings with officials and told them to fix the facilities immediately so that people would trust the plan again.

What is Going to Change at the Amma Canteens

The government of Tamil Nadu has now stated that all Amma Canteens in the state will be updated and fixed on a big scale. It has been told to the people in charge to improve the lights, paint the buildings, and buy new cooking pots and tools.

The government is also working to keep things clean and make food better. It is important to the government that the food served in canteens remains cheap, healthy, and clean. There have been reports that local governments and municipal corporations will pay for the renovations with their own money.

Officials say there are more than 600 Amma Canteens open in Tamil Nadu right now, with more than 380 of them in Chennai alone. Several centers will likely be upgraded in stages, and mobile Amma Canteens may also be improved and deployed in busy public spaces and areas where people don’t have much money.

Making a political move that has emotional value

The revival of Amma Canteens is not just a welfare decision, it also carries strong political meaning in Tamil Nadu. There are many ties between the plan and former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, whom her fans called Amma.

By choosing to continue the scheme under the same name and invest in its revival, the Vijay government appears to be reconnecting with a programme that already holds deep emotional value for the public. Politicians think that Vijay’s reputation as a leader who cares about the general good and safety could be improved by this move.

Vijay, who recently entered full time politics and became Chief Minister after the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, has been trying to position himself as a fresh alternative in the state’s political landscape. Analysts believe welfare focused decisions like reviving Amma Canteens can help his government build trust among ordinary citizens.

Not Just Cheap Food

For many people in Tamil Nadu, Amma Canteens are more than a food scheme. They stand for help during hard times. Daily labourers, senior citizens, hospital visitors and migrant workers often rely on these meals every day.

Even during periods of inflation and economic pressure, the canteens have continued to offer meals at highly subsidised prices. In cities where eating outside has become expensive, Amma Canteens remain one of the few places where a person can still get a full meal for under ₹10.

The latest revival effort aims to restore the original spirit of the programme: affordable, hygienic and dependable food for everyone who needs it. If implemented successfully, the renovation drive could once again make Amma Canteens one of Tamil Nadu’s strongest public welfare symbols.

For now, the focus remains on rebuilding public trust, improving food quality and ensuring that the canteens continue serving the people who depend on them the most.
