Mamata Banerjee, Chief Minister of West Bengal, has made a significant announcement aimed at the welfare of the unemployed youth. From now on, there will be a monthly allowance of ₹1500 to help cover everyday basic living costs while searching for employment. This scheme will provide essential financial support to each young person that has successfully completed the 10th Class (Secondary School) exam and without being employed. By offering this assistance, the West Bengal Government hopes to help provide young men and women with ways to improve their qualifications via education and skill development.
The benefit amount will be paid through the “Banglar Yuva Sathi” program, an existing West Bengal Government initiative to support youth. It is anticipated that this program will provide temporary financial assistance for those young people who have finished school but are struggling to find employment. Eligible participants will receive direct payments from the State Government into their respective bank accounts through a system called “Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).” By implementing these new measures with Government Grant assistance, many unemployed young people in West Bengal will have a unique opportunity to become financially independent and build a successful Career.
Eligibility Criteria
The state government has established eligibility criteria for applicants. Eligible applicants are required to:
- be a resident of West Bengal
- have passed their tenth grade (high school) completing examination.
- be between 21 years to 40 years of age
- be unemployed and looking for employment
- not receive any other form of assistance from other government schemes (with the exception of scholarship).
Those who meet these criteria will be qualified to collect their monthly allowance until they find work or the programme is re-evaluated.
Timeline for Implementation
Initially, the government was to issue the allowance starting April 1. However, the Chief Minister announced the programme would begin earlier: on March 7 (the day before the International Day of Women), this date was chosen as a show of support and pride.
The announcement was made during a live public address at a state-wide sit-in. The Chief Minister also indicated that the earlier launch was being done to alleviate some of the economic hardships unemployed young people currently face.

Significant Response from Job Seekers
Even before any items officially began, there was already considerable interest from applicants. Registration camps were set up throughout West Bengal, and they attracted significant numbers of applicants. Reports of long lines at various locations were common as young unemployed men could be seen rushing to register for the allowance.
Reports suggest more than two hundred thousand (200,000) individuals registered on the very first day of accepting applications for financial assistance. This demonstrates a high demand for such assistance. All assembly constituencies held camps to assist applicants with completing applications and understanding the requirements to be qualified for the program.
