Amid a week of acute political vulnerability, Bangladesh plunged into a night of violent uproar as word spread that Mr Sharif Osman Hadi was dead. The 32-year-old covenor of Inqilab Mancha and the fresh face of July Uprising 2024, died today at a Singapore hospital Thursday, nearly a week after being assassinated in Dhaka.

The response was fast and incendiary. Hours later, the skyline of the capital was visible lined with smoke from mobs attacking media houses and political landmarks, in what had turned a moment of mourning into a dangerous diplomatic and civil crisis.

The Chronology of the Crisis

The unrest broke out late Thursday evening, just hours after Singapore General Hospital said Hadi died of irreversible brain damage. When masked men on a motorcycle shot him in the head while he was campaigning for a parliamentary seat in the Bijoynagar area of Dhaka.

How the Unrest Unfolded:

10:30 P.M. Protesters gathered at Shahbagh Square, the traditional fulcrum of Bangladeshi activism, shouting slogans against “Indian hegemony” and the “fascist” Awami League.

12:00 A.M.: Mobs rampaged through Karwan Bazar, attacking the country’s two most prominent newspapers, Prothom Alo and The Daily Star. The publications were criticised by the protesters of being “pro-India” and allegedly not championing revolutionary movement.

1:30 A.M. Arson attacks were carried out at the media offices. As smoke filled the floors below, almost 30 journalists — including Ms. Tamanna and The Daily Star’s senior reporter Zyma Islam — became trapped on the rooftop of The Daily Star building in a gut-wrenching scene.

3:00 AM Violence also flared in Chattogram, where a huge sit-in took place outside the Indian Assistant High Commission. Security forces fired tear gas after the base was stoned, according to a commander at the scene.

The “Anti India” Narrative Becomes a Driving Force

Though the death of a youth leader was an act of domestic tragedy, on the street the emerging plot turned with rapidity toward New Delhi. Hadi’s entire political persona was constructed on scathing anti-India rantings, with his party very frequently distributing objectionable “Greater Bangladesh” maps and demanding a total divorce from Indian Kerry syllaboles.

After the shooting, the country’s interim government, headed by Nobel Prize winner Muhammad Yunus, suggested that the attackers may have run toward the border with India. This triggered a new round of diplomatic confrontation, with the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) clearly stating its refusal to “false narratives” that falsely implicated India in the murder.

On the ground, however, the idea of an “Indian hand” was a trigger for the night’s bloodshed. Protesters organized under the banner of “July Oikya” called for the immediate shutdown of the Indian High Commission until such time as the suspects were handed over, increasing pressure on already strained relations between two countries.

A Nation on the Precipice

Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, in a televised address early Friday morning, declared Sharif Osman Hadi to be a “Martyr of the Revolution” and said he would observe a national day of mourning on Saturday. He promised that the “heinous murderers” would be brought to justice, but also urged restraint.

Still, an uneasy sense of calm prevails. The national election is due to be held on 12 February 2026 and the killing of such an important candidate has raised questions about whether a democratic transition can take place peacefully.

What Happens Next?

What is͛ front of the shadow leadership now, the immediate priority for interim administration, is getting Hadi’s body back from Singapore and keeping things under control through what will likely be a gargantuan funeral. India still sees its diplomats and the issue at border as most important with anti India narrative being it’s at the highest point since 2024 revolt.
