The long-awaited second airport for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) in India is finally becoming a reality. Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), after all these years of planning and construction, was opened by India’s prime minister Narendra Modi, on October 8, 2025. It was a major landmark; however, the commercial launch of this airport was set to follow. This airport was first conceptualized in 1997. However, it got a major boost in the late 2010s.

A Milestone Achievement in Indian Aviation History

NMIA will be developed as a Greenfield airport, which means it will be an entirely new airport, to be built from scratch, and will help ease the current congestion problems at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), which has the largest single runway in the world.

Operational Launch: December 25, 2025

The airport is set to begin its commercial flights from December 25, 2025, as it opens its doors as part of India’s civil aviation sector.

  • Initial Operating Hours: The operating hours for NMIA at inception shall be limited and operate between 08:00 and 20:00 hours daily, with a total of approximately 23 departures and a rate of 10 aircraft movements per hour.
  • First Flight Arrivals: The first flight expected at the airport is the IndiGo flight 6E460 from Bengaluru at about 8:00 AM, followed by the first departure flight, which is the IndiGo flight 6E882 headed to Hyderabad at 8:40 AM.
  • Initial Airlines: IndiGo, Air India Express, and Akasa Air would be some of the carriers that would operate in the initial phase. These would connect the airport to around 16 domestic destinations.

This staged rollout will allow the operator to ensure operational readiness before commencing operations. Additionally, it will give the airlines the needed boost to increase operations as the passengers stabilize.

Functional Readiness: Extensive Preparation

Prior to opening, NMIA carried out an Operational Readiness and Airport Transfer, or ORAT, which entails a set of operations completed prior to opening in an attempt to simulate operations in airports.

These simulations involved the cooperation of hundreds of members of staff and volunteers and various entities including security and airline companies. More than 1,300 potential problems were identified and remedied in this process to ensure that risks in operations before operational flights are minimized.

In addition, CISF has been deployed in major operational spots, thus enhancing passenger security as well as adherence to country-specific aviation requirements.

Passenger Experience & Digital Services

The airport is being developed as the first ever fully digital airport in India, complete with high speed free Wi-Fi, voice assistants, and real-time updates on the “Adani OneApp” platform.

Passengers will be able to:

  • Get current flight information and wayfinding support.
  • Track your luggage. View parking information.
  • Use the same app experience for most of your airport-related requirements.

These digital projects are also expected to make traveling more convenient for passengers, especially first-time users of the airport.

Connectivity & Access Challenges

Although the operational efficiency is ensured, the ground connectivity faces some issues during the launch. The NMIA is situated at Ulwe, Panvel taluka, which does not have direct metro or express railway connectivity with the Mumbai main suburban rail network.

The initial option for reaching the airport would be by road transport, involving taxi, Uber, and buses. There are also pending developments for enhanced connectivity by roads and eventual combinations of train and metro services. All these shall take time in being fully achieved.

Future Development Plans and Projections

The NMIA is an airport that is being developed in stages and can currently accommodate up to 20 million passengers in a year in phase one of the project.

By February 2026: The airport is expected to shift towards 24×7 operations with an increased number of departures (estimated 34 per day).

Future Infrastructure:

Plans include the creation of new terminals and parallel runways to accommodate passenger volumes of up to 90 million per annum, which would make the airport one of the largest in the country of India.

In the long run, NMIA is poised to be at the forefront of air traffic dispersal within the Mumbai region, facilitate new routes of connectivity, both international and domestic, besides fostering economic activity by means of cargo operations, employment generation, and regional development activities.
