The former Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir, Farooq Abdullah, received an attempted assassination in Jammu at the wedding of Aahil Gupta on March 12, 2026.

According to reports, a suspect approached Mr. Abdullah from behind and shot a handgun at very close range post the ceremony. In an act of pure luck, the suspect missed Mr. Abdullah, and Mr. Abdullah was unharmed. As per the protocol, security personnel immediately apprehended the shooting suspect and placed him into custody. The unplanned attack has raised many concerns over the security of other high profile politicians in Jammu and Kashmir.

The suspect has been positively identified as a 63 year old male from Jammu who was placed into custody by security personnel who apprehended him at the scene of the incident; the pistol used in the attempted assassination was placed into evidence by law enforcement.

The suspect allegedly confessed during his first questioning to having a personal vendetta against Abdullah and for planning his attack for almost two decades according to police sources; it is believed he was acting alone and initial investigations have not shown any links between this act and any terrorist organization or any militant group.  The authorities continue to investigate the true motivation behind this incident and whether or not there were lapses in the event’s security.

Moment of Panic and Swift Security Response

Eyewitnesses to the incident stated they experienced moments of panic when hearing a gunshot at the crowded wedding venue; however, before the suspect could pose any further/worse danger, Abdullah’s security detail responded quickly and prevented him from escaping after apprehending him.

There were several political leaders and officials present at the event including high-ranking members of the Jammu and Kashmir Government, and Abdullah was immediately escorted from the area by security personnel, while the suspect was detained.

The shooting provides examples of the challenges involved with securing the safety of political figures in informal public settings, such as social gatherings or private functions.

Farooq Abdullah’s Reaction

The former Prime Minister Abdullah told reporters immediately following the attack that at first he thought it was a report of a firecracker. However he later realised that it was a gunshot directed at him.

In discussing his escape, Abdullah stated “thankfulness that I was spared”; he thought about how in this circumstance “the assassin has an advantage…you never know when that will happen”. He expressed appreciation to his security team and all the well-wishers who reached out to him after the shooting incident to show support.

Political Reaction and Security Issues

As a result of this assassination attempt, there was a strong reaction of condemnation from many of the main political leaders in the country, across all political parties. Most expressed relief that he was unharmed, and strongly urged that there must be an investigation into the shooting incident.

As reported, Union Home Minister Amit Shah made contact with Abdullah to inquire about how he was following the incident. Political analysts believe this shooting will lead to further discussion on the bolstering of the security protocols for VIPs (the shooting occurred at what would generally be considered a private event, which typically have less stringent screening procedures).

Security agencies are currently reviewing how the assailant was able to get so close to the former Prime Minister and have so many armed guards present.

A Veteran Leader with a Long Political Career

Having been born in the year of 1937, Farooq Abdullah has established himself as one of the leading politicians of Jammu and Kashmir, and has served many times as the region’s chief minister. He was formerly also a union minister for new and renewable energy and has held this position under the Indian Government.

He is also the son of legendary Kashmiri politician Sheikh Abdullah, and he is the father of Omar Abdullah (former chief minister) from Jammu and Kashmir. The recent attempt on his life reaffirms that politicians are still at great risk when it comes to leading in a politically unstable environment.
